The 2015 annual awards presentation night at St Mary’s Catholic College was full of smiles and applause but it was also tinged with sadness … it will be the last in Kingaroy for popular school principal Michael Nayler.
In his address to the packed Maryknoll Centre, Mr Nayler admitted he was sad to be leaving but was also looking forward to being back with his family; he has been working away from home for the past four years.
He said he had originally come to St Mary’s to say “thank you” to former Kingaroy parish priest Fr Kevin Ryan, who had taught him as a Year 9 student about working with the poor and marginalised.
The late Fr Kev had taken him from barbecues with the elderly, visiting mental health facilities to working with Vietnamese refugees and the homeless.
“These experiences had a profound impact on my life, and took me from a typically self-absorbed teenager to a young adult with a passion for justice and a deep faith,” Mr Nayler said.
“This is what sparked my own passion for working with the poor and marginalised and is the reason why I have pushed our St Mary’s students and staff to work with the elderly and the poor and homeless at events like our community barbecue in Kingaroy and at our street retreats in Brisbane.
“In later years when my wife and I visited Fr Kev here in Kingaroy I was struck that his presbytery was open at all hours for struggling families, young people and adults who would come for a coffee or a meal.
“I hope that I have at least in part paid Fr Kev back for his gift to me. Certainly, my time here at St Mary’s has been a great joy and a great gift to me.
“I cannot thank this wonderful St Mary’s community enough for your support and kindness.”
Mr Nayler said he was extremely confident that St Mary’s Catholic College would be in good hands with the incoming principal, Mrs Angela Myles, who will take over in 2016.
Mrs Myles had been working at Shalom College in Bundaberg for the past 13 years and has been Deputy Principal there for the past five years.

Guest speaker for the awards night was former St Mary’s student Tessa Carty, 20, who has her eyes set on representing Australia in rowing at the next Olympics.
Tessa attended the College from 2000 to 2010. She then moved to Bundaberg with her family in 2011 where she was identified by Rowing Australia in 2012 as a potential champion rower.
She has since represented Australia twice at the Under 23 world championships and this year claimed silver in the women’s squad at the event.
Tessa answered the question that everyone always asks her: ‘Why do I get up at 5:00am every morning to row?” The answer: “Because I genuinely love the sport”.
She admits that she was first tapped on the shoulder because of her height (185cm) and at the time she was much more comfortable in a dancing class than a gym.
“But in a moment my dreams changed from Broadway to competing at the Olympics!” she said.
“Rowing is a sport where height is a great advantage.”
In 2012, she won her first medal at the Queensland State Championships. She was then invited to start training at the Queensland Academy of Sport.
In just over 18 months she has been selected in two Australian teams and won a medal at the U23 world championships in Bulgaria.
“I still have a long way to go but I can’t wait for the 2016 season to begin,” she said.
“Three years ago I had no idea I would be here now; I have no idea where I will be in another three years.”
