My Saturday morning broadcast on Wild Horse FM 99.7′s Sportstime went out at its usual time this week, but my column is a little bit late due to technical gremlins. My apologies to all our regular readers.

Anyway, we have plenty of bowls news for you today.

Let’s kick off with what the Burnett District Ladies have been doing.

* * *

The Burnett District Ladies held a very successful day at Binjour Bowls Club last Saturday. 16 mixed teams played in windy conditions, and most clubs in the district were represented.

This was the first time that a day such as this was run by the District Ladies to raise some money to help fund the Annual District Sides trip which – this year – is being held at Gold Coast.

Winners were the Gayndah team of Amy Bellert (skip), Warwick Bellert, T Colvin and Brodie Kirk. They received gift vouchers donated by Mitre10 Gayndah.

Runners up were the Murgon team of Carol Watters (skip), Maureen Janke, Lyn Mundy and Carol Hatchman. Their trophies were donated by Burnett District Ladies

Third place went to the Binjour team of Pat Darlington (skip), Steve Meyer, Maureen Guyatt and Doug Darlington. Their trophies were donated by Lyn Woodall Monto

And the Sportmans Award went to the Binjour team of Lyn Krause (skip), Jack Krause, Snow Taylor and Gayle Evans. Their trophies were donated by Mundubbera Pharmacy.

Bowls at Binjour:

Woodford’s Seafood Day is probably one of the most popular tournaments on the calendar for this part of South East Queensland, and it was a very successful day financially and socially.

It was played on Thursday over two rounds of 13 ends, with 6 points for a win and 2 points for an end.

Overall winners were Peter Hughes’ team from Glass House. They bolted in with 45 points. Runners up were the Bigwood team from Bribie, who scored 44 points.

Round winners were interesting too.

Bob Graham’s team from Woodford won the second round with 22 points on a count-back from the highly fancied Yarraman team skipped by Merv Fitch.

Merv’s team included their President Brian Dugdell, their B Grade champion Horst Meyer and Leo Robinson.

A win over Merv Fitch is always something to skite about!

Round one went to the Past President’s team skipped by Henry Sanderson – they scored 26 points.

There wasn’t much left for the seagulls after the day finished.

Esk news:

There’s always something social going on at Esk, and last Sunday they all went to Crow’s Nest.

The names of all players went in to the hat and teams were drawn at random.

Result? “It was amazing how close the scores were at the end” one onlooker said. A very good friendship and networking exercise.

The club also held Pub Day on Tuesday and, as always, there were a lot of visitors.

First round winners: Don Schimke’s team from Laidley.

Second round winners: Bill Percy’s team from Gatton

Overall winners: Don Currie’s team from North Ipswich

Runners-Up: Ted Jenkin’s team from Esk.

The first round of the 2014 round robin will be played at the Durack-Inala club tomorrow week.
