Supernatural horse play at a farm in Lamberhurst.
Working farms are fairly down to earth places, but even these country retreats aren’t safe from the attentions of spirits, if a tale from the early 20th century is to be believed.
In 1906, workers at Furnace Mill Farm in Lamberhurst reported an astonishing equestrian event on the premises. To begin with, large barrels had been moved around the site, without being noticed by the guards or dogs on duty. But the real surprise was discovered when workers peered through a narrow gap into a hayloft and spotted a horse inside!
There was no way the imposing animal could have squeezed through such a tiny hole – in fact, the wall had to be knocked down in order to free the unfortunate creature. The extraordinary move was put down to a poltergeist, presumably the same restless spirit that had heaved the barrels around for fun. Now we know why the horse had a long face…
