Everything you need to know about in this weekly series: The Hardcore trailer you’ve got to see, a television show about an alternate end to World War 2, a comedian that you need to listen and laugh to, could humans live on the surface of Mars, and some tasty mixed drinks to celebrate/mourn the end of Summer.

At Social Underground we go beyond the mainstream stuff and see what’s underneath the surface. What should we get into, listen to, read, eat or watch? If there is something in our culture that needs attention that’s our job: Show you the underground things that you need to know about: Books, music, television, movies, comedians, art, and whatever else we can find to get you into something you never knew about. That’s The Underground.

1. The Hardcore trailer is, well, hardcore. Movies have been pretty stale lately. It’s not that there aren’t original movies coming out, it’s that there hasn’t really been anything that really made you stop and go “What the hell was that?!”

Well, at the Toronto International Film Festival show off the trailer of a new movie titled Hardcore. It looks like it’s shot completely from the first person, is extremely violent, and is a fresh entry into action movies.

Henry, a newly resurrected cyborg who must save his wife/creator from the clutches of a psychotic tyrant with telekinetic powers, AKAN, and his army of mercenaries. Fighting alongside Henry is Jimmy, who is Henry's only hope to make it through the day. Hardcore takes place over the course of one day, in Moscow, Russia.

That synopsis alone is worth the price of admission. Check out the trailer below and have your mind blown.

2. The Man in the High Castle is a TV show coming to Amazon that will change your entire view on World War 2.

Around 10 years ago I had an idea for a book/film that would be centered around what would of happened if the Allies lost the war. I started researching the causes, the key battles, and everything in between. What stopped me in my tracks was when I came across The Man in the High Castle by Phillip K. Dick. It was pretty much the same idea, except he did in decades ago and happens to be one of the most prolific authors of the 20th century.

It premieres on November 20th on Amazon, but I’m positive you can watch the pilot right now if you have an Amazon prime account. I watched the first two episodes earlier today, and I have to say that it really makes you question what history could’ve been.

Check out the trailer for The Man in the High Castle below. Nah, just kidding. Check out the pilot below. You know I spoil you.

3. Jim Jefferies is the funniest comedian that will make you laugh about very controversial subjects. In America, we tend to get uptight over jokes. Someone hears a joke, plays a game of telephone, goes on TV, tells the joke wrong, and then the comedian has to publicly apologize. The comedian is standing on a comedy stage, chances are he will be telling jokes.

Jim Jefferies is a comedian that comes out of Australia, and he doesn’t just tell crude jokes, he tells jokes that will kick a subjects ass up and down. He is known for specifically targeting religion and his storytelling abilities are some of the best in the game. If I had to compare him to an American comedian, it would probably be Bill Burr. They both have similar subject matter, but tell it in their own classic fashion.

Here are a few classic bits of his:

Gun Control

Atheism

British Airways in South Africa

Family and Christianity

4. TED Ed asks: Could we actually live on Mars? We all want NASA to fly with a group of astronauts to Mars and set up a colony. That’s the dream, but we haven’t really gone anywhere in 40 years, and NASA keeps getting the table scraps in the budget.

Is it possible we could actually live there? Every time you see a rendering of what it would look like to live there, you see small pods and astronauts in giant suits on the surface. Imagine the worst Winter ever, but you can’t breathe outside, grow food outside (maybe), go anywhere, and then come back and live in a tiny room. How could you not go mad over a certain period of time?

This video from TED tries to answer the questions about living on Mars:

5. Summer is winding down, so how about you learn about a few mixed drinks to soak up those last few rays of sun. Yep, It’s the end of Summer. Kids are going back to school, the leaves are changing color, for some reason all of the stores are rolling out Christmas crap months in advance, so you might as well take these last weekends to sit on the back patio with a mixed drink and appreciate the sun before the clouds roll in and the snow comes.
