Today’s lesson in Facebook Marketing Mastery is all about making you the star of your page. So click on the button that says “About”. It will be on the left side of your page and looks like this:

The first topic to cover under the “About” section is “Category”. This is where you can change the category your business is in. Depending on which category you choose, there is a big list of industries to pick from as well. If you already set this up, then there is no need to change it. However, in the future if your business or services change this is where you tweak that.

You probably already set up your business name, but you can change it if necessary.

Be advised, Facebook stresses the fact that your business name needs to reflect what your page is about. They review name changes to protect the identity of the businesses, brands and organizations that Facebook Pages represents.

Only authorized representatives can manage a Page for a brand, place, organization or public figure.

Facebook has provided some guidelines regarding the name of your Facebook Page. Click here to read those rules.

The next line is labeled “Topics”. This can be a bit tricky, but it is Facebook’s way of optimizing your page through keywords.

For example, if you have a brick and mortar business and you sell flowers, you might type “roses” in the box. You will get a drop down box with other pages with roses. Choose one, preferably with a lot of likes, and you’ll see that page as one of your topic keywords in the box. Do this two more times and you’ll have three keywords or key phrases and those will be your links.

Moving on down to “User Name”……

This will be your Facebook user name so preferably you would want it to read @whateveryourbusinessnameis. For example if your business page is Miller Management then you would want your user name to be @millermanagement.

Keep in mind, if someone else is already using the name you want, you will not be able to use it. But this is your chance to get creative. When you type your brand name in the box, Facebook will let you know if that name is available. If it’s not, try adding a number at the end or perhaps your first name to it. It won’t change the name of your page or affect your marketing at all. This is strictly a Facebook user name that you will use when linking to your Facebook Page.

The next three topics are “start date”, “address” and “hours”. These three options are just that…..options. If you have a brick and mortar location then you definitely will want to fill in your address and hours of operation. However, if your business is online then your address and/or hours may not apply. The start date is something that you might want to fill in if you’ve been in business for a while and are perhaps just now creating a page. Again, all three are options and up to you.

For now, we are going to skip over “short description” and come back to that. Let’s talk about “Impressum”. You will not have to do anything with this field unless you live in a country like, Austria, Germany, or Switzerland. They require businesses to include a statement of ownership on their web presence. If you do need to provide that information you will have 2000 character to do so.

Ok, here is where the fun begins! Let’s talk “short”, “long”, and “Bio“,  descriptions. You will have 155 characters to fill in a “short description” of your page. I highly recommend filling this in. Visitors to your page want to know more about you! This section gives them a quick burst of info about what your business is all about.

The “long description and Bio” have no character limit and they are your opportunity to share your best assets. Here you can be playful and yet impressive, all the while getting your audience wanting more of what you have to offer.

Here is an example of Jeff Goins, Writer, Short, Long, and Bio on his Facebook Page…

Here is an example of Pam Moore’s Short description, Long Description and Bio….

A lot of marketers use their description sections to link to various websites, landing pages and sales pages. Unless you are selling something right off the bat, let your audience really get to know you by using these descriptions to tell them who you are and what you’re all about.

I have included a really cool “about” page fill in the blank cheat sheet. This will help you create both your short and long descriptions and can be used on other platforms for your business or blog.

Next is the option to write a little something about your company in the “Company Overview” section. Again, this is optional but the more information you can give your audience the better.

The next six on the list are self explanatory. Simply fill in the information under these topics “Mission”, “Founded”, “Awards”, “Products”, “Phone” and “Email”.

So here’s the deal, if you don’t have a mission statement, that’s ok. If you haven’t won any awards, that’s ok too. The only option you really need to fill in is your email address. This is your business page and you need a way for your potential clients to get in touch with you. If you have a brick and mortar business then a phone number is a must as well, but otherwise, I would not add a phone number unless you truly want to be available by phone.

If your page is an “artist”, “band” or “public figure”, you will be given the option to add “other accounts” information. Your options are…..

If your page falls under the category of “entertainment“, you will be given the option to add various descriptions to whatever type of entertainment your page is about. For example, if your page is a book then you have the opportunity to add who the publisher is, what the ISBN # is, and the genre. Different options will apply if your page is a television network, movie, concert or whatever.

If you have a “Website” or blog perhaps, you will enter that address on the next line. This will help drive your traffic to your site as it will appear under the “About” section on the right side of your Facebook Page under your “short description”. When visitors see it they will be able to click on it and go directly to your site.

The blue “Promote Website” button is for advertising purposes, so you do not need to worry about this button or setting up anything related to this right now.

You will most likely not need to fill out the “Official Page” section. In the event your are officially representing a brand, celebrity or organization, this is where you will enter that information.

Ok, now we are going to switch gears and go back to the main page so go back to the top, to the tab above “About” and click “Home” or go to the top of the page on the left where it says “page“. Clicking “Page” or “Home” will take you back to your newsfeed.

Underneath your cover photo and above your news feed you will see a box that says “More“.

Click on the button that says “More”. You will see a drop down box that looks like this:

Click on each of these to see what they do and if you need to make any changes to your page.

Now go back to your Home page and click on “Manage Tabs”.

These options are available:

This is a really cool feature! It allows you to re-organize what your audience sees on the tool bar of your page. You can play around with this feature and move things around to decide how you want it set up.

The “Photos” and “Videos” section will be where all your photos and videos are stored in the event you need to find one you have used before.

If your page has the “Reviews” option you will be able to see those here. You might have “Likes” where you can see who has liked your page, you might have “Services” and “Offers” where you can post specific things you want your audience to know about and finally, you might have the option to see your “Posts” and “Events“.

The thing to keep in mind is that depending on what type of business you set your page up as, will determine your choice of tabs.

And here is a fun fill-in-the-blank questionnaire, that you can download, that will help you with what you want to say in your “About” section.
