1960s
Astonishingly these two high profile football nations met only once during this decade. England came away with a creditable away win in Rome in 1961, where future (albeit unsuccessful) recruits Gerry Hitchens and Jimmy Greaves scored England’s goals.

1970s
After a nearly two decade absence, the sides met again. In fact the frequencies of the matches between the nations increased in this deacde. While England were slowly fading under Ramsey, Italy were becoming a major force.
The 1973 encounters were both won by Italy. In the November match, future England Manager Fabio Capello scored Italy’s winner.
In 1976, the first match in a neutral venue in USA, saw the English winning (3-2).

A few months later, the first official encounter took place in a World Cup qualifier at Rome. The following year, despite losing, the Italians eliminated England from the World Cup 1978 Finals.
