Festival Supreme, the 4th annual comedy and music festival curated by Jack Black and Kyle Gass of Tenacious D was held again this year at the Shrine Auditorium and Expo Hall on Saturday October 29th. Featuring a diverse array of comedians and musicians, this year’s theme The Final Frontier, brought out a ton of enthusiastic fans sporting a wide variety of sci-fi themed cosplay to the festival’s three stages.
Early in the day, the festival’s masterminds Jack Black and Kyle Gass performed as Tenacious DJ on the indoor Space Disco stage. Wearing themed space suits and spinning music from behind a giant glowing mother ship the duo set the mood perfectly for the incoming crowd. Another highlight was their brief appearance during Will Forte’s set later in the night when they reprised a song from Forte’s “Spelling Bee” skit on Saturday Night Live.
Comedians that headlined the Crab Nebula stage inside the Shrine Auditorium included Tim Heidecker, Jenny Slate, the previously mentioned Will Forte, and Sarah Silverman. However the clear standout of the lineup, and truly the whole festival this year, was Patton Oswalt. After a heartfelt introduction by Jack Black, the headlining comedian took the stage and delivered a hilarious set of poignant satire about the death of his wife Michelle Eileen McNamara in April of this year. Clearly moved by the crowd and the honesty of his material, the comedian took the audience on an emotional roller-coaster that was sometimes sad, but always funny.
While the space inside the Shrine’s large auditorium was reserved for comedy, the outdoor Omega Stage was clearly the musical heart of the event, featuring various bands and acts, many of which are directly tied to comedy. Highlights of the day included the sweet sounds and hilarious lyrics of Garfunkel & Oates, as well as a Talking Head’s Parody band called Test Pattern featuring SNL alums Fred Armisen, Bill Hader, and Maya Rudolph. Comedian Eric Andre brought a travelling version of his insane Adult Swim show that at one point saw several audience members onstage chugging ranch dressing. Later in the evening Weird Al Yankovic brought his signature brand of comedic satire to the biggest audience of the night. Jemaine Clement and Bret McKenzie or Flight of The Conchords “New Zealand’s Tenacious D” as they referred to themselves, finished off the night with a fantastic set of funny tunes.
