Rock veterans AFI are certainly in demand in 2017 and that was more than apparent on their recent North American ‘The Blood Tour’ as they played to mostly SOLD OUT venues over their 5 week trek. The band ended their tour in Southern California in grand fashion with three SOLD OUT shows at The Observatory in San Diego then two SOLD OUT shows at The Wiltern in Los Angeles. Out supporting their January 2017 release and tenth studio album The Blood Album, the band kicked off their two night stay in LA on Friday night February 24.
Opening this epic night of live music were rockers Souvenirs then the band Nothing who both did a fine job getting the crowd prepped for the focus of the night AFI. The band hit the stage at 10:00pm and opened the show with “Strength Through Wounding” off the 1999 album Black Sails in the Sunset and this began a high octane set of both older and new AFI songs that resulted in a very well put together setlist. Frontman Davey Havok had the audience in the palm of his hand as he took them through a journey of faster uptempo songs mixed in with some of their slower material. Gutarist Jade Puget along with bass player Hunter Burgan and longtime drummer Adam Carson showcased their individual talents throughout the night while Havok commanded the crowd.
The band ended the set with two of their biggest hits “Miss Murder” and “Silver and Cold” and then returned for an encore of “God Called in Sick Today” which had Havok out in the audience with the fans and then ended the night with “This Celluloid Dream”. 26 years into their career, AFI is performing at their best and don’t appear to be slowing down anytime soon.
