Pacific Palisades, Calif. – Jan. 28, 2015 - Protect Our Winters (POW), the organization engaging and mobilizing the winter sports community to lead the fight against climate change, announces the appointment of four new members to its board of directors.
“2015 will be a crucial point in the battle against climate change, and we’re truly honored and excited to be adding these new members to our board. With them, we’re positioned well to elevate our effectiveness of unifying the winter sports community to address the threat of global climate change,” said POW’s Executive Director Chris Steinkamp.
The new board members include:
Donna Carpenter, President, Burton Snowboards
Donna Carpenter and her husband Jake Burton Carpenter are the sole owners of Burton Snowboards, the world’s leading snowboard company. Since 1982, Donna has held a multitude of roles at Burton. During the past three decades, she has built snowboards, answered phones, expanded Burton’s market to Europe, including living in Austria for four years, and held the CFO position. Today, Donna is the President of Burton, assuming leadership of the company’s global human resources and overseeing the company’s global sustainability efforts in order to improve Burton’s social and environmental impact. This work includes strengthening social responsibility in the supply chain, creating sustainable solutions to product design, improving product packaging sustainability and expanding the company’s waste and energy reduction strategy. In doing so, Donna is helping to make snowboarding sustainable well into the future. Sustainability is a part of Burton’s culture, and the company also takes climate change and clean energy action personally. In addition, Donna serves on the ESPNW Advisory Board, and heads up the Chill Foundation. Donna also spends as much time as possible with her three sons and Jake, and she is an accomplished backcountry snowboarder with over 30 years of riding experience.

He currently serves on the Advisory Board of the Center for Climate and Security and the Climate and Energy Funders Group. He was previously board chair of the Truman National Security Project Educational Institute and Independent Diplomat, which helps small, island nations deal with the existential threat of climate change. Pete McBride, Photographer/Filmmaker
Native Coloradan Pete McBride has spent two decades studying the world with a camera. A self-taught, award-winning photographer, writer and filmmaker, he has traveled on assignment to over 70 countries for the publications of the National Geographic Society, Smithsonian, Outside, Esquire, Audubon, Stern, GEO and companies like Patagonia, Microsoft, The Nature Conservancy and more.
After a decade working abroad and completely a journalism fellowship at Stanford, Pete decided to focus his cameras closer to home on a subject closer to his heart. Combining his passion for aviation and his belief in conservation, he spent over four years documenting his backyard river – the Colorado. This journey culminated in a coffee table book: “The Colorado River: Flowing Through Conflict”, and a series of short films “Chasing Water”, “I AM RED” and “Delta Dawn”. He now focuses his lenses and energies on watershed issues and related stories around the world to raise awareness about freshwater challenges.
His work as a photographer and filmmaker have garnered awards from Pictures of the Year International to the Banff Mountain Film Festival and many more. American Photo Magazine named Pete as one of the top five water photographers in the nation and in 2014 after completing a story following the length of India’s Ganges River, The National Geographic Society named McBride a “freshwater hero”.
When not lost on assignment or doing public speaking, you can find McBride exploring the creeks and mountains in the Rocky Mountains, or practicing mandolin on his back porch in Basalt, Colorado. You can see samples of Pete’s work at: www.petemcbride.com.
