Manatee County Commissioner Larry Bustle will not seek re-election.

The 80-year-old representative of District 1 informed the board of his decision on Wednesday morning. He has held the seat since 2008 but recent health issues have kept him away from board functions.

“I was recently given clearance by my doctor to resume a limited schedule as part of the County Commission. I participated in Board meeting by telephone this month and I plan to attend many meeting in person in October,” Bustle stated in a letter addressed to the BOCC. “After a summer of rest, rehabilitation, recovery and careful reflection I have decided not to run for re-election next year.”

Bustle goes on to say he will finish his second term and begin a new chapter in his life, devoted to his wife Edie, family and friends. He originally filed to seek another term in April but he suffered a stroke during a Manatee County Chamber of Commerce breakfast on May 11th.

A military veteran and former Mayor of Palmetto, Bustle has served the public for over four decades.

“It has been a distinct privilege and honor to devote my adult life first in the service of my country and then in the service of my community,” Bustle added. “After 46 years in public service, I say thank you.”

Two candidates have already applied for the District 1 seat, a district that includes the northern part of the county including Rubonia – Republicans Corie Holmes and Nathaniel Leonard.

Holmes sought the District 2 seat in 2014 but lost to Charles Smith. Leonard ran against Bustle in 2012 but was defeated in the GOP primary.
