Summertime is great for traveling, seeing the sights, and spending time together, but it doesn’t have to break the bank. Check out these great ways to save on family travel this year.

.) This year instead of booking a hotel, try booking your lodging by owner. Many people rent out their condos or homes during the summer and it’s a great way for you to snag a deal. Usually when you speak to the owner personally they are willing to negotiate, which is an added bonus. They also will generally already have all of the amenities and the local flair you wouldn’t find in a hotel. Check out vrbo.com or airbnb.com for owner rentals.

.) Day trips are a great way to get your family moving on a budget. Try taking a one-tank trip somewhere fun- maybe a historical landmark, amusement park, beach, or park. Your family will feel like they are getting away on this mini trip.

.) Flying can be expensive, but there are still ways to save. Try bringing your own snacks and an empty water bottle for your kids, as meal prices and beverages tend to be sky high in airports. If your trip isn’t going to be that long, try bringing a carry-on instead of a checked bag. Packing light will save you time, money, and headache.

.) Social media is surprisingly a good way to find out about summer travel deals. Try following travel sites, or your favorite destinations on Facebook or Twitter for last minute escapes. Often times you can save up to 30% on travel just by “liking” their page.

.) If your schedule is flexible, plan to fly on a weekday. Most people are looking to get out of town Thursday-Saturday and return Sunday-Monday, so by booking a mid-week flight you will generally save quite a bit.

.) Scope out your own town. Often times there are attractions, historical sites, and local exhibits only a few miles away. Take a bike trip to these places and pack a picnic for a fun, and affordable family adventure.

.) Try booking a package deal. These often include airfare, lodging, car rental, and meal vouchers. Many times they will throw in a free family friendly activity as well. Sites like livingsocial.com or groupon.com are great to keep an eye on, as you can purchase the deal in advance and use it later.

.) Traveling with extended family or friends is also a good option to save. You can split the cost of a vacation rental, food, and gas. It can be a fun way to give your kids friends to have on the trip and also give you someone to talk to.

.) If you are staying with friends or have a vacation rental, opt to cook instead of eating out. It’s much cozier than a restaurant and a great way to spend family time. Also, many towns have local markets where you can buy fresh produce on a dime. Save on the tip money and treat your family to a home cooked meal while on vacation.

.) Lastly, be sure to purchase travel insurance. It’s an added cost, but will save you in the long run. You never know what could happen while on vacation, this will give you peace of mind and save your pocket.

These tips are bound to help you and your family travel this summer. Sometimes just cutting a few costs can make all the difference.
