Avant-Garde Circus kidswear for Raspberry Plum from the early 20th Century and it’s influence on art and fashion inspire the new fall/winter 2017 collection previewed on Smudgetikka today.
One of my favourite British based designer kids labels, RaspberryPlum is avant-garde and experimental yet highly wearable, there are only a handful of designers in kidswear that are really moving the trends along and Raspberry Plum is one of them.
The collection pays homage to artists such as Matisse who took inspiration for many of his collages from the circus as well as legendary Elsa Schiaparelli, who’s designs were bold, avant-garde, surreal and closely liked with circus costume and graphics.
The entire collection features a strong, abstract, deconstructive graphic style shown through prints, embroidery, jacquard knitwear and hosiery. The prints were created through collage and original paintings. Some of the applique and print designs combine solid fabrics along with photographic cut-outs. This inspiration comes from the German dada artist Hannah Höch, who’s work is surprisingly modern and current.
Colour always plays an important role in the Raspberry Plum aesthetic. For aw17/18 the colour inspiration was taken from circus posters from the early 20th century. Vibrant reds, soft pink, sulphur yellow, and shades dusty turquoise and deep teal.
The fabrics include metallic Italian silk blend weaves for structured full skiers, wool blend pastel coats with leatherette appliques and layers of transparent organza combined with solid colour crepe fabrics.
Raspberry Plum will be exhibiting the collection for fall/winter 2017 at trade shows Pitti Bimbo, Dot to Dot London, Playtime Paris and Playtime New York.
