On Sunday, October 9, 2016, at approximately 12:35 a.m., Baltimore County Police and Fire personnel responded to the University of Maryland, Baltimore County campus in the 1000 block of Hilltop Circle after a student was found unconscious. The student was declared deceased at the scene by medical personnel. Police identified the UMBC student as 17-year-old Eric Thomas Askins from Hollywood, Maryland. Askins was a freshman at UMBC. There were no signs of foul play. The official cause of death will be determined by the Office of The Chief Medical Examiner. The Baltimore County Police Homicide Unit is investigating this death. The Homicide Unit investigates sudden deaths where the cause is not apparent. This investigation is classified as a death investigation. The college released a statement Sunday saying: “Early Sunday morning, we learned of the death of one of our students. The student was found unresponsive in a residence hall room and pronounced deceased by the Baltimore County Police. There are no obvious signs of foul play. The State Medical Examiner is conducting an investigation to determine the manner and cause of death. We do not have any further information at this time.”
