Donnalyn Pompper, SMC ’94, ’01, associate professor of strategic communication in Temple University’s School of Media and Communication, won the “2014 Top Book Award” from the Organizational Communication Division of the National Communication Association for her recent book, Practical and Theoretical Implications of Successfully Doing Difference in Organizations. The book was published earlier this year by Emerald Group Publishing Limited in the U.K.; the first volume in its International Perspectives in Equality, Diversity and Inclusion series.

The award was made at the Organizational Communication Division’s annual business meeting on Friday, Nov. 21. On behalf of the awards committee, Scott D’Urso commended the accomplishment and the review committee’s decision:  “This book provides amazing coverage of  ‘difference’ in organizations. It is an important book for our times that not only incorporates the work in organizational communication, but also stretches beyond that to provide a very rich picture of these issues.”

D’Urso continued, “This book is great and approaches difference in organizations in two really useful ways. [I]t moves past the idea of surface level differences, just investigating ethnicity, and picks up on the theme of interrogating whiteness. . . The range and scope of analytical, ethical and methodological perspectives on difference in organizations that are included in this volume are commendable. It effectively weaves together considerations of both theory and practice regarding social identities and their relevance to organizations, with an important focus on social justice as its foundation.”
