We're probably correct in assuming that most of us here shampoo our hair daily. It's one step that we rarely miss in our bathing routine, no matter how loud the kids are whining outside the door. But, when we hear it can cause dandruff or dull hair, there's a voice inside all of us that are probably skipping with joy--hey, a morning shortcut! But should you really lay off the shampoo every other day or skip the hair wash entirely? The decision is entirely up to you.

Trichologist (a.k.a. hair health specialist) Kevin Mancuso, global creative director for Nexxus New York Salon Care, says it all boils down to personal hygiene. “Scalp is skin--you wouldn’t walk around with a greasy face,” he says to The Telegraph. Lifestyle is also a factor, as well as your preferred hair style, he adds. Heat, sweat, and pollution tend to cause hair to accumulate dirt, and thus it would need a wash to keep it clean. Remember, hair comes in contact with your face, so keeping it clean is crucial.

Taking all that into consideration, here are some tips to help you decide on whether to shampoo and wash every day or not:

For normal hair
With normal and healthy hair, you can opt to skip shampoo every other day--provided that you don't engaged in strenuous activities (going to the gym or running after your kid in the playground) and or isn't exposed to harsh environments (read: pollution). Associate fashion and beauty editor Ira Nopuente of Femalenetwork.com advises to condition hair tips every day to keep your tresses from drying out from all the shampoo action.

For oily tresses
You simply have no other choice but to wash and shampoo daily. Too much oil on the scalp of hair causes it to accumulate dirt even more, and you really don’t want that. Shampoo and hair washing daily will help regulate your hair oils and keep it clean. Retty Contreras of Cosmo.ph suggest using a volumizing dry shampoo to give flat and greasy roots a lift.

For dull or fine locks
Shampoo, with all its chemicals, tend to wipe out the hair's natural oils--these oils help give you hair that shine or volume. If you have dull tresses to begin with, it’s okay to wash every other day. “Fine hair tends to get greasy quicker and lose its shape, so washing every day is usually a must,” Suave Professionals celebrity stylist Jenny Cho tells InStyle. Washing every day can give dull or fine locks the oomph it needs.

For curly locks
For thick, curly locks specifically, Abraham Sprinkle, celebrity hairstylist and member of the Keratin Complex International Creative Team, suggests to shampoo every two to three days or use cleansing conditioners to protect the hair curls. Natural oils from the scalp doesn't spread as quickly to the hair strands compared to straight hair, so too much grease wouldn’t be too much of a problem.

That said, with the weather here in our country and the pollution especially in the city, it's probably best to shampoo daily. But do it properly: don't use too much shampoo and choose the right product for your hair type.
