Many people have the ambition to build their own home, but having all the necessary facts and regulations to hand isn’t always easy. This is why the online publication of the National Construction Code (NCC) has come as welcome news to the industry as a whole.

Plans were originally announced in June last year, but it’s only now that 2015 is fully underway that this useful resource can now be accessed. Previously, users faced a cost of nearly $400 to look at the information, which is particularly handy for building and plumbing practitioners.

There’s also the added benefit of the fact that the NCC will now only be updated on a three-yearly basis as opposed to annually – a process that will begin next year.

“Extending the interval between amendments will deliver more certainty and stability about regulatory change to the Australian building and construction industry and is an important deregulatory step,” noted Chair of the Australian Building Codes Board John Thwaites.

Now the online edition of the NCC has come into force, the Housing Industry Association (HIA) believes it will make the process easier for anyone with construction home loans. The NCC is a legal requirement for anyone construction homes, which is why access to these regulations is more important than ever.

Kristin Brookfield, senior executive director of building, development and environment at the HIA, said builders and contractors alike will be able to save hundreds of dollars each year. The decision to move the amendment cycle to every three years also helps encourage certainty, while reducing the amount of red tape faced by the sector.

“The next challenge is to give the industry open access to the hundreds of Australian Standards that are referenced by the NCC,” Ms Brookfield noted.
