COLÓN, Raúl. Draw! illus. by Raúl Colón. 40p. S. & S./Paula Wiseman Bks. Sept. 2014. Tr $17.99 ISBN 9781442494923; ebk. $10.99. ISBN 9781442494930. LC 2013043781.
PreS-Gr 3– Using watercolor and colored pencils, Colón has created a wordless book (based on his childhood) that speaks volumes. A boy, home for the day perhaps because of an illness, sits on his bed reading a book about Africa. He begins to draw. Five identical, intensely colored pictures of the boy with an easel, art supplies, and a pit helmet increase in size as readers begin this richly imagined day on a safari. He draws an elephant as an egret watches, and atop the elephant’s back, the boy and bird find a herd of zebras. They pose for him as he sits on a stump. Giraffes thunder by, raising clouds of golden dust. The boy draws them, his body aslant as his eyes follow them. He draws a gorilla, who holds his helmet and shares his sandwich. He draws lions, a water buffalo, and a hippo before sighting a charging rhinoceros. Running with all his might, he barely escapes the rhino. Baboons retrieve his pencils, set up his easel, and draw him. They also eat his sandwiches as the day slides into evening. A spread poignantly captures the parting of boy and elephant. Eyes closed, he lays his head against his friend’s side while the elephant’s trunk gently caresses the boy’s cheek. As six identical paintings decrease in size, the book returns to the boy’s pale room, now strewn with drawings. The final scene shows the boy at school, holding the elephant’s picture front and center. The pleasure the boy takes in making and sharing his art is palpable. Young artists will love this book, as will all children who know the joy of exploring their own imaginations. A must-have for every library.–Mary Jean Smith, formerly at Southside Elementary School, Lebanon, TN
Feiffer, Jules. Rupert Can Dance. illus. by Jules Feiffer. 32p. Farrar/Michael di Capua Bks. Aug. 2014. Tr $17.95. ISBN 9780374363635. LC 2013908976.
PreS-Gr 2 –Rupert loves to watch Mandy dance all day long. But what the child doesn’t know is that when she goes to bed, her quiet ginger cat slips on her dancing shoes and dances the night away. Rupert wants to keep his secret, but one night Mandy wakes up, and Rupert is caught in the act. When she decides to teach him some steps, he hides under the bed (“Cats are not meant for lessons. Cats are free spirits”). Then Mandy understands and cleverly hatches a plan that ends with the two friends joyfully dancing together for years. This story focuses on the relationship between the two characters and celebrates the joy of dancing, alone or with friends. Feiffer has created a compelling, yet concise, sequential narrative that shows the importance of imagination and being flexible. Sets of three consecutive scenes are used several times to focus on a character’s emotion or motivation. The mixed-media illustrations feature loose and broad line work that will be familiar to Feiffer’s fans. The balance of full-page art and characters dancing against the white space propels the story forward while providing visual variety, and the large size of this book makes it great for group sharing. The main text is large and bold and done in a stylistic font, while Mandy’s dialogue is in an easier-to-read font. A first purchase for cat fans and free spirits everywhere.–Amy Seto Musser, Denver Public Library
Jay, Alison. Out of the Blue. illus. by Alison Jay. 32p. Barefoot. Jun. 2014. Tr $16.99. ISBN 9781782850427.
PreS-Gr 3 –Full of shells, rocks, and other found objects, this wordless beachcomber’s tale captures a lively seaside setting with a lighthouse at its center. The boy who lives in the lighthouse, his dog and cat, and many others enjoy the beach on a clear day—boating, swimming, walking, collecting—but careful observers will notice the clouds creeping in. Volleying in and out of the comfort of the lighthouse that night, readers see the storm rage and bring in a large tide. When the new day dawns, a giant octopus has beached itself with its legs entangled in netting. At first people run in fear, but the lighthouse boy, his friend, and some animals bravely come to free the giant from the nets. The following comical spread shows everyone coming together to return the octopus to its home as all of the creatures of the sea, from orcas to dolphins to deep sea divers, grab a leg and pull. Rounded lines and exaggerated shapes and figures give the visuals, (done in alkyd oil paint with a crackle varnish), a magical storybook quality. The illustrations use borders and point of view to great effect in telling the story. Back matter includes relevant information about tides, lighthouses, the giant octopus, and trash. Perfect for hours of poring over and sharing.–Julie Roach, Cambridge Public Library, MA
Newgarden, Mark & Megan Montague Cash. Bow-Wow’s Nightmare Neighbors. illus. by Mark Newgarden & Megan Montague Cash. 64p. Roaring Brook/Neal Porter Bks. Aug. 2014. Tr $17.99. ISBN 9781596436404.
K-Gr 4 –In this wordless, comics-style picture book, Bow-Wow’s neighbor cats have bitten his tail and stolen his soft doggie bed. Bow-Wow must travel to the spooky house next door to retrieve his bed, only to find a house full of tail-biting cats, trapdoors, pictures with eyes, shifting shadows, and all kinds of other spooky objects. Just when it seems things couldn’t possibly get any stranger, Bow-Wow finds the scariest thing of all: a giant (almost room-sized) cat. Nestled nearby is his missing doggie bed. Will the jumbo kitty and her many dozens of feline minions let Bow-Wow escape with his bed? Digitally designed panel graphics offer a sophisticated visual narrative with subtle and humorous details. This unique book challenges readers to pay attention, all while working through the realms of the real, the familiar, nonsense, and play.–Jennifer Miskec, Longwood University, Farmville, VA
Willems, Mo. The Pigeon Needs a Bath! illus. by Mo Willems. 40p. Hyperion/Disney Book Group. 2014. Tr $16.99. ISBN 9781423190875. LC 2013003178.
K-Gr 2 –Persuasive Pigeon is back. He doesn’t feel that he really needs a bath—after all, it’s a “matter of opinion.” “Clean” and “dirty” are “just words, right?” With a polished technique that logically approaches the problem, Pigeon speaks with a child’s voice as he rationalizes his decision while forcefully questioning those who might even suggest that his personal hygiene and the flies buzzing around are not just “coincidental.” The water might be “too hot…not deep enough…too cold…or too wet,” but it only takes a mere 30 tiny frames and a dramatic large-font spread before Pigeon grandly displays the myriad possibilities for a happy bird in the bath. Willems’s dirt-smudged pigeon is at once clever, garrulous, energetic, and just slightly excitable. Through simple flat-line illustrations, this bird’s expressions and attitude are easy to discern. Pigeon fans will not want to miss this book, a “must add” to all libraries, for any reader appreciating the perfect art of persuasion.–Mary Elam, Learning Media Services, Plano ISD, TX
