Blackall, Sophie. The Baby Tree. illus. by Sophie Blackall. 40p. Penguin/Nancy Paulsen. May 2014. RTE $17.99. ISBN 9780399257186.

K-Gr 2 –A delightfully age-appropriate way to give young children the facts about conception and birth. A baby is coming, and the soon-to-be big brother has many questions, his most persistent one being “Where do babies come from?” After gathering partial answers from his babysitter, his teacher, and his grandpa, he is more confused than ever. The boy has heard that babies come from a baby tree, the hospital, and special delivery by stork. Feeling dissatisfied with these answers, he finally asks Mom and Dad, who lovingly sit down and explain exactly where babies come from. In one page, they relate the truth, explaining that an egg comes from the mother, a seed from the father, resulting in the growth of a baby—an explanation that satisfies the protagonist’s curiosity and makes him realize that there is a bit of truth in every story. Well, except for Grandpa’s. He just may have to explain to him where babies really come from. The story smoothly sails from tale to tale as the main character searches for answers. The back matter goes into more detail for children who would like more information. The Chinese ink and watercolor illustrations are beautifully crafted and designed in a manner that shows movement. Each page is adorned with soft colors and crisp, clear pictures that enhance the story. Another wonderful contribution from Blackall.–Amy Shepherd, St. Anne’s Episcopal School, Middleton, DE

Cole, Henry. Big Bug. illus. by Henry Cole. 32p. S. & S./Little Simon. Apr. 2014. Tr $14.99. ISBN 9781442498976; ebk. $12.99. ISBN 9781442498990. LC 2013020626.

PreS-Gr 2 –A bug may look huge to itself and other bugs. A leaf may seem big among other leaves. When you put the two objects next to each other, one will look bigger in comparison to the other. Cole has taken this idea of scale and turned it into a fascinating story that will delight kids and enthrall parents and teachers looking to teach the concept to young children. The lush paintings capture the beauty of the natural world while also showing simple comparisons. The spare text is perfectly used throughout, highlighting the unique qualities of the things that surround us. Cole starts off with a single ladybug and escalates to the vast bright blue sky before bringing the reader back down to the smaller level of a single ladybug crawling on a napping dog’s nose. The concept of scale is brilliantly depicted on the title page (where tiny ladybugs crawl over the title of the book in large font) as well as the endpapers. The different font sizes further highlight the use of scale in his breathtaking illustrations. Big Bug is a unique reading experience with broad appeal.–Christopher Lassen, Brooklyn Public Library

Floca, Brian. Five Trucks. illus. by Brian Floca. 32p. S. & S./Atheneum/Richard Jackson Bks. Jun. 2014. Tr $17.99. ISBN 9781481405935; ebk. $17.99. ISBN 9781481405942.

PreS-Gr 2 –With the sparest of texts, this book features airport vehicles rarely seen in preschool books as well as the trucks’ diverse drivers (men and women of various ethnicities). Unlike most counting books, the story introduces ordinal numbers (first, second, etc.) rather than cardinals (one, two, three). On the second appearance of each truck, the text counts back from the fifth to the first truck, adding another concept covered in the book. It’s when viewers see each truck for the second time that it is identified by name, e.g., catering truck, baggage conveyor, etc., in a different font, giving the feel of an informational book for young audiences. A wordless subplot about a boy with his dad and a colorful plaid suitcase starts on the title page. The suitcase is easily identifiable as it’s loaded onto the plane. The story culminates with the boy waving to the drivers from his airplane seat. While the crisp, clear illustrations, rendered in watercolor, ink, and gouache, are uncluttered, there is much to talk about in the pictures. Whether shared with vehicle-loving youngsters or general audiences, this book should satisfy many listeners/viewers with its rich content and engaging art.–Maralita L. Freeny, District of Columbia Public Library

Kuhlmann, Torben. Lindbergh: The Tale of a Flying Mouse. illus. by Torben Kuhlmann. 96p. NorthSouth Books. May 2014. Tr $19.95. ISBN 9780735841673.

Gr 2-6 –In this gorgeous sepia-toned adventure, a heroic little German mouse must escape the terrifying and fatal clutches of the mousetraps in his homeland. He decides to make his way to America. The notion of a sea voyage is quickly abandoned when he narrowly escapes the sharp claws of a hungry cat guarding the pier. Soon after, he is inspired by his flying cousins—bats—and decides to invent an apparatus to fly across the sea to the land of freedom. After several failed attempts and a close call with a formidable owl, the mouse succeeds—piloting a tiny aircraft, goggles atop his diminutive head, map in hand. His daring flight becomes famous in his new country and inspires a young boy named Charles Lindbergh. Kuhlmann’s stirring illustrations are the true star here—capturing the darkness and danger of the creature’s native land as well as the light and breadth of his transatlantic journey. Minute details in the intrepid rodent’s facial expressions and body language will immediately draw in readers who gravitate to animal stories, while the careful attention to machinery and architecture will encourage repeated viewings. So strong is the visual narrative that the text is almost superfluous; this book can be enjoyed wordlessly. Back matter that includes a short history of aviation rounds out this rich offering. –Kiera Parrott, School Library Journal

Light, Steve. Have You Seen My Dragon? illus. by Steve Light. 48p. Candlewick. Apr. 2014. Tr $16.99. ISBN 9780763666484. LC 2013943993.

K-Gr 2 –This unique counting book will be a hit with children who love looking at finely detailed illustrations and searching for hidden items on each page. A boy has lost his dragon and asks the building doorman if he has seen him. The spread shows one large green dragon in a fancy apartment building. When the doorman answers, “No,” the boy goes looking for him all throughout the city. “Maybe he got hungry and stopped for a hot dog,” he thinks. But even as he buys a hot dog of his own, he doesn’t see the dragon hiding and eating one himself. That’s two. He passes three purple busses, but doesn’t see the dragon. Four blue sailboats raise the possibility that he went for a swim in the river. And so it goes, up to 20, when the boy finds him “right where I left him,” hiding on the roof near 20 red paper lanterns. The book is illustrated in pen and ink in a picture-book style that is reminiscent of the late 1950s to early 1960s. The drawings are produced in black ink only, except for the highlighted object on each page. A map on the endpapers outlines the route the boy takes throughout the city. All in all, an excellent offering.–Roxanne Burg, Orange County Public Library, CA

Pizzoli, Greg. Number One Sam. illus. by Greg Pizzoli. 40p. Hyperion. May 2014. RTE $16.99. ISBN 9781423171119. LC 2013021231.

PreS-Gr 1 –Sam is used to winning everything, including car racing, his sport of choice. His wall of trophies and trinkets show off his talent for success until the day the unthinkable happens: the pup loses the big race because he stops for a group of oblivious chickens in the middle of the track. Then his cheering friends and the chickens let him know that he is still number one with them. Children will be able to relate to Sam’s disappointment when he loses while also understanding the concept that winning isn’t always everything. Pizzoli’s playful, cartoon illustrations perfectly showcase the message in a fun way yet never come off as didactic. Pizzoli’s use of four-color art provides an airy, uncluttered vision for his story that will definitely attract children. The simple yet exciting text drives the story forward and will make it a popular choice at storytimes.–Christopher Lassen, Brooklyn Public Library

Rowand, Phyllis. It Is Night. illus. by Laura Dronzek. 32p. HarperCollins/Greenwillow. May 2014. Tr $16.99. ISBN 9780062250247. LC 2013028060.

PreS-Gr 1 –Fresh illustrations for Rowand’s 1953 text reward young children, who are sure to enjoy this quiet, classic ode to bedtime. Repetitious phrases help create a soothing tone, while the pictures reinforce the peaceful and calming nature of the story. Dronzek’s acrylic illustrations are awash in the colors of bedtime; blues, grays, and purples are accented with subtle white and yellow pops that mimic stars and streetlights. Children’s imaginations are at the forefront of the text with the simple question of “Where do _____ sleep?” while the artwork provides realistic renderings of both the animal and its sleeping spot. The final scene, taking up a full spread, creates a feeling of familiarity for children—all of a sleeping girl’s toys are gathered on her bed with her. Dronzek’s images have given Rowand’s text a well-deserved spot on bookshelves and nightstands that currently feature bedtime soothers such as Margaret Wise Brown’s Goodnight Moon and Deborah Underwood’s The Quiet Book (Houghton Harcourt, 2010).–Beth Dobson, Weatherly Heights Elementary School, Huntsville, AL

Santat, Dan. Beekle: The Unimaginary Friend. illus. by Dan Santat. 40p. Little, Brown. Apr. 2014. Tr $17. ISBN 9780316199988. LC 2013017700.

PreS-Gr 2 –How long would you wait and how far a journey would you make to find your truest friend? Born on an island for imaginary friends, Beekle waits to be “imagined by a real child.” He waits and he waits, but his turn never comes. Filled with impetuous courage, Beekle does the unimaginable and heads out across deep waters until he reaches the real world. He finds that life there is so harried that no one notices him. Eventually, as he waits at the top of a star-leafed tree, a small girl with a friendly face calls out to him with a picture in her hand. They learn to be friends, share adventures and snacks, joke, “and together they did the unimaginable.” Santat’s attention to detail in the mixed-media illustrations shares a child’s eye for laughter and movement on full-bleed spreads with strategically placed text. Gazes of wonderment, broad smiles, and changes in perspective ensure an easy transition from page to page. Beekle’s round white visage and taped orange paper crown are immediately identifiable in each scene, a sharp contrast to his surroundings against variations of dark neutrals on a city street or the brightly colored dragons of a child’s imagination. Like Beekle’s new friend, there’s something here that feels just right as an “unimaginary” friendship creates a joyous, recognizable bond. A terrific addition to any library.–Mary Elam, Learning Media Services, Plano ISD, TX

Soman, David. Three Bears in a Boat. illus. by David Soman. 40p. Dial Bks. for Young Readers. May 2014. RTE $17.99. ISBN 9780803739932. LC 2013017796.

PreS-Gr 1 –Breaking a prized blue seashell while their mother is away and knowing they’ll be in big trouble, three mischievous bears set out to sea to find a replacement. The plot is simple, yet the bears don’t find what they’re looking for immediately. They search, fight with one another, and even get caught in the middle of a storm. Their adventures will keep readers interested, making the story a great read-aloud, and the mother bear will leave readers with an ending that will appease parents everywhere. The gorgeous, bright and detailed illustrations are a perfect fit for the text. A first purchase for all.–Brooke Rasche, La Crosse Public Library, WI

Walker, Anna. Peggy: A Brave Chicken on a Big Adventure. illus. by Anna Walker. 32p. Clarion. 2014. Tr $16.99. ISBN 9780544259003.

PreS-Gr 1 –Peggy the hen likes her routine. When a windstorm blows her out of her decorative suburban chicken coop, she has to adjust to the unfamiliar sights and sounds of a busy city. She tries on shoes, eats popcorn at the movie theater, and makes a cozy nest in a furniture store. Although she isn’t able to communicate with anyone in the crowds, Peggy eventually finds her way back home by following the trail of a bouquet of sunflowers and, later, a flock of pigeons. Walker’s ink and photo collage illustrations are dreamlike in appearance. Admirers of Janet Morgan Stoeke’s “Minerva Louise” books (Dutton) will relish the chance to meet another charming chicken.–Tanya Boudreau, Cold Lake Public Library, AB, Canada
