Creative Director

Slate is seeking a talented individual to lead design across the company. As creative director, you’ll be in charge of Slate’s visual identity and of elevating its impact across all platforms. You’ll work with Slate’s world-class editorial, tech, product, native, and sales teams to lead a smart, innovative, successful company to the next level. We are a collaborative, iterative company, so we want an ambitious soul who will do excellent work in house, rather than project manage an outside design firm. And yes, that means that we’re willing to make major changes to our current design.

The creative director will oversee all editorial design for Slate’s award-winning flagship site, lead product design for Slate’s presentation across platforms, and be the steward of Slate’s visual identity across native advertising and marketing materials. The brief is to ensure a beautiful, consistent, reader-centric experience wherever users encounter Slate.

Ideal candidates will:

Provide a legitimately exciting portfolio of digital work

Have a background in media and a love of Slate

Be able to provide a glowing reference from someone they managed

Want to understand the real-world performance impact of their designs

Ask about how closely they’ll be able to work with developers

Responsibilities:

Ensure that the overall look and feel of Slate supports its point of view and mission across all platforms: web, native apps, and Facebook Instant, Google AMP, Apple TV, etc.

Provide guidance to and coordination with designers working on native ads and marketing materials

Lead design reviews with stakeholders around the organization

Manage the art and design budgets

Qualifications:

This is senior role. You must have seven years’ experience, including prior management experience.

Slate is a digital-only magazine, so strong candidates will have a focus on modern digital design, including responsive design.

You must be in NYC or D.C., and you must be comfortable communicating with and managing people who are remote.

We are a magazine built primarily of words; strong written and oral communication skills are a must.
