Producer, Slate’s The Gist

Slate’s consummate daily news and opinion podcast is looking for a producer to join our team. Ideal candidates listen to The Gist regularly, and know terms like “Lobstar of the Antentwig” and possibly “um Peru de Peru do Peru.” This position will be based out of Slate/Panoply’s New York City (and soon, Brooklyn) office, and work closely with Mike Pesca, and Slate’s executive producer Steve Lickteig.

The producer we’re looking for has many skills: Someone who can sort through the torrents of information passing before our eyes each day, and choose the two or three stories people will be talking about that evening and that require a closer look. A voracious news consumer who can confidently define the stories and frame the arguments that people should be talking about. We want a producer who knows the rules of professional radio, and knows when those rules need to be tweaked or even scrapped entirely. We’re also looking for strong journalistic and editorial skills, and someone who will help create a show they themselves would love to hear every night, not that they think some mythical “average listener” might like. We want someone who enjoys experimentation, who’s not afraid to fail, and yet who mostly succeeds.

Essential Responsibilities:

Generate ideas for one to three stories and guests per day, and book those guests.

Engineer recording sessions with the host and guests. Includes ability to set up remote connections.

We’re looking for an IT support technician. This is an opportunity for a junior IT professional to extend his or her capabilities. This position involves some desktop support, some server maintenance, and general IT systems oversight. Front-End Designer/Developer, Panoply

Slate magazine helped pioneer podcasting back in 2005, but in the 10 years since, the technology powering on-demand audio has barely changed.

The Position

We need a user-experience-oriented front-end designer/developer who relishes in the design process—from dashed-out whiteboard concepts to full-fidelity design. We want somebody who can debate the finer points of UI/UX, analyze the DOM, prioritize page performance, and implement designs that work for all screens.

You must have a strong visual eye along with expertise in the standard Web stack and be able to communicate clearly with co-workers and clients.

Responsibilities

Create design guidelines and standards to ensure consistent user experiences across platforms

Collaborate closely with stakeholders and the product team to conceptualize new products and features wherever user needs are not being met

Produce prototypes of varying degrees of fidelity

Shepherd projects from wireframes through full visual design and development

Follow through on designs with clean, performant code

Walk colleagues and stakeholders through design decisions

Continually lift the standard for design across the organization through your work

Troubleshoot and solve problems when testing and publishing new products

Participate in meetings with nontechnical staff regarding user experience

Requirements

Our marketing team is seeking a spring intern. This role is perfect for a highly motivated individual with an interest in live programming, storytelling, and event production. The intern will work directly with our executive producer of live programming to plan and execute high-impact events in New York, D.C., and cities around the country.
