SXSW FILM ANNOUNCES 2015 FEATURES LINEUP

Austin, Texas – February 3, 2015 – Marking its 22nd year, the South by Southwest (SXSW) Film Conference and Festival announced the features lineup for this year’s event, running March 13 – 21, 2015 in Austin, Texas. The 2015 slate showcases independent discoveries from emerging directors, auteur-driven comedies and works by master filmmakers.

During the nine days of SXSW Film, 145 features will be shown. The lineup below includes 60 films from first-time filmmakers, and consists of 100 World Premieres, 13 North American Premieres and 11 U.S. Premieres. These films were selected from a record 2,385 feature-length film submissions composed of 1,614 U.S. and 771 international feature-length films. With a record number of 7,335 submissions total, the overall increase was 13% over 2014.

New for 2015, the festival’s juried competition categories, comprised of Narrative Feature world premieres and Documentary Feature world premieres, have increased to include ten films per category, up from eight films in each. The Midnighters feature section and the Short Film program will be announced on February 10. The complete Conference lineup and schedule will be released on February 17.

Following last year’s successful debut of the Episodics screening section, SXSW 2015 will premiere 5 new series. SXSW Film Conference and Festival also offers expanded Convergence programming, celebrating the intersection of Interactive, Film and Music, and open to more than one badge type. Convergence highlights include the return of SXsports with a record number of panels and screenings; Future of TV, a formalized conference track looking at the changing landscape of television; Digital Domain examines modern day storytelling with a focus on experimental projects and SXSW Comedy hosts a handful of sessions during the conference. Additionally, for the first time and as an expansion of Convergence programming, SXSW Music badgeholders can attend all screenings in the 24 Beats Per Second Film Festival category.

“SXSW is always fascinated by films that take a familiar trope and somehow, against all odds, make it fresh and exhilarating – works that spin tantalizing webs out of what seems like thin air,” said Head of SXSW Film Janet Pierson. “When faced with a record 2,400 feature submissions, we had every intention to cut back on the total number in our lineup. But as we discovered the fantastic array of talent and fell in love with these 145 features, we had no choice but to program as many that resonated as possible.”

The twenty features in the Narrative Competition and Documentary Competition sections will vie for their respective Grand Jury Prizes, announced during the SXSW Film Awards on Tuesday, March 17 at 8pm at the Paramount Theatre.  Other awards include Short Film Jury Award winners, Design Award winners, and Special Award winners. All feature film categories, except Special Events, will be eligible for category specific Audience Awards, announced via sxsw.com on Saturday, March 21.

In addition to nine full days of film screenings, SXSW Film Conference (March 13 – 17) will feature over 250 sessions covering a wide range of informative topics, including Keynotes with previously announced Golden Globe nominee Ava DuVernay, Mark Duplass and RZA, and a Conversation with Gina Prince-Bythewood among others. For more information on Conference sessions, additional Conversations, Meet the Insiders, Meet Ups, Mentors, Panels and Workshops, visit sxsw.com/film/conference/sessions.
