If The Big Short wins Best Picture at this year’s Academy Awards, I will laugh and laugh and laugh.
No, not because it’s a bad movie. Not at all! In fact, it’s a very good movie (it made /Film’s top 15 of 2015). However, nothing would tickle me more than the knowledge that Adam McKay, the director of Anchorman and Step Brothers, made a movie that his peers named the number one accomplishment in cinema of the past year. The guy who filmed Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly rapping “Boats ‘n Hoes” may be the on the verge of Hollywood’s most prestigious honor. That’s amazing.
The latest gust of wind in The Big Short‘s sails is its victory at the 2016 Producers Guild of America Awards, where it took home top honors over The Revenant, Spotlight, The Martian, Mad Max: Fury Road and other strong competitors. Does this guarantee a big win at the Oscars? No, but it certainly gives it some momentum. Check out the complete winner list from the 2016 PGA Awards below.
Although the PGA Awards represents only a portion of Oscar voters (the guild is not nearly as large as the Screen Actors Guild, for instance), their top film award has correctly predicted the final Best Picture winner since 2007. So one of two things will happen in February: the PGAs will once again correctly predict which film takes home Oscar gold or its nearly decade-long streak of aligning with the Academy Awards will come to an end.
The Big Short taking home this honor only adds fuel to the theories that The Revenant, despite an astonishing 12 nominations, is not the frontrunner for the top prize. Alejandro González Iñárritu’s revenge thriller will undoubtedly battle George Miller’s Mad Max: Fury Road for most of its technical nominations (and Best Director is looking like a definite Miller versus Iñárritu showdown), but The Big Short and Spotlight are looking increasingly likely to pull an upset in the Best Picture category.
While the Director’s Guild of America awards may point at the future Best Director winner, it will probably be the SAG awards that give an indication of what movie will win Best Picture. If Spotlight wins that trophy (and considering its incredible ensemble, that is likely), this will be one of the most unpredictable Oscars in history.
