The last time we checked in on the progress at 1001 South State Street in Chicago, the Solomon Cordwell Buenz-designed development was almost fully wrapped in glazing. In the succeeding months, cladding has enveloped the entire 41-storey volume, and crews worked away on readying the 397 apartment units for occupancy. Residents are now moving into South Loop's newest highrise abode, as final cosmetic touches are applied to the project.

Led by Golub & Company and CIM Group, the luxury rental building offers studio, one-, two-, and three-bedroom floor plans that afford views of Lake Michigan and the dense Chicago skyline. Residents will find grey-tone plank flooring, floor-to-ceiling windows, dual-tone kitchen cabinetry, quartz countertops and stainless steel Whirlpool appliances accenting their units.

The building's amenities cater to tech-minded residents by featuring an innovative Makerspace. This creative corner includes the technical tools, like a milling machine and laser printer, that allow residents to create prototypes of their envisioned widgets and inventions. Fresh herbs will be grown within a freestanding biowall, an outdoor pool produces prime opportunities to cool off in the summer sun, and a fitness centre provides a place to get in shape. Additional amenities include a conference room, games room, media room, bicycle repair area, dog run, and pet grooming station.

Three levels of parking are situated above a strip of nearly 9,000 square feet worth of retail space. The irregular geometric form of the building stretches downwards to the street, where a small corner plaza serves as an extension of the sidewalk. With the completion of the cladding installation and removal of the temporary hoist, the building's eye-catching curves and slopes can be fully appreciated.
