Raising funds for the Teenage Cancer Trust
A charity football match is to be staged in memory of young Coventry City supporter Ross Emslie to raise funds for the Teenage Cancer Trust at the Ricoh Arena.
The 15-year-old Sky Blues fanatic who lost his six-month battle with leukaemia last month met captain Carl Baker, his team-mates and City’s management team in the last few weeks of his life.
Lee Thomas, secretary of Coventry Saracens, who Ross played football for, is organising a charity match at the Ricoh Arena on Sunday, December 1 between former Sky Blues players and Team Rossy who will feature former Coronation Street actor Graeme Hawley and The Enemy.
Billy Bell from the Coventry City Former Players Association has organised for ex-Sky Blues stars Willie Carr, Steve Ogrizovic, Marcus Hall, Harry Roberts, Claus Jorgensen, Jimmy Holmes, Dean Emerson, David Busst, Dave Bennett, Paul Culpin, Micky Gynn, David Phillips, Peter Billing and Tony Dobson to be involved in the game which will kick-off at 1pm.
All the proceeds will go to the Teenage Cancer Trust which aims to raise funds, educate and support teenagers fighting cancer across the UK.
Tickets priced at £5 for adults and £3 for concessions will go on sale at midday on Wednesday (November 6) from www.theticketfactory.com or by calling 0844 338 8000. Car parking will be £1 cash on the day.
Ross’s dad Dave said: “On behalf of the Emslie family we would like to thank CCFC, the Ricoh Arena and CCFC legends for giving us this opportunity to raise money for Teenage Cancer Trust at Birmingham Children's Hospital as this was where Ross received the majority of his treatment and care.”
Lee, who coached Ross from under-nines to under-16 level, said he was always a positive happy boy who loved playing football and also had a season-ticket to watch the Sky Blues.
“Ross learnt his strength and determination from his loving family and fought so hard to try to beat his leukaemia,” he said.
“The Ricoh Arena, Coventry City FC and Sky Blues in the Community have been amazing in helping us raise much-needed cash for Teenage Cancer Trust by allowing us the use of the ground and the kit.
“We are grateful to all the staff including the stewards for volunteering to help on match day and the Sky Blues legends for giving up their free time as well.
“We now hope for a big crowd on the day to all join together in fond memory of Ross to enjoy a celebration of his life and a good football match.”
Michelle Aucott, Teenage Cancer Trust Regional Fundraiser, said: “We’re really pleased that this fantastic event is raising money for Teenage Cancer Trust.
“We know that the support from the organisers, and everyone that buys a ticket, will make a massive difference to the lives of young people diagnosed with cancer across the West Midlands.”
Liz Cooper, marketing director at the Ricoh Arena, said the game would be a fitting tribute to Ross.
“Ross was a massive Coventry City supporter and loved being part of the ‘singing corner’ at the Ricoh Arena,” she said.
“The charity match will be a great opportunity to see former Sky Blues stars in action as well as collecting money for an extremely worthwhile cause.
“The Teenage Cancer Trust carries out vital work to support teenagers with cancer as Ross’s family unfortunately know only too well and we hope as much money as possible can be raised.”
Whitefriars Housing Group is the Team Rossy sponsor and Minitab Ltd is the match ball sponsor and opportunities are available to be the match, ball boy or referee sponsors. There is also programme advertising available and raffle tickets can be bought at the turnstiles for the chance to win a signed framed David Beckham Real Madrid shirt plus framed signed CCFC, Sheffield United and England tops. CCFC are providing a programme and supplying kit for Team Rossy and five match balls. More information is available from Lee Thomas on 07879 253266.
Coventry University students will be filming the match with commentary and pre and post-match interviews to sell DVDs of the game to further boost the funds of the Teenage Cancer Trust.
