Breast reconstruction is something magical for the women who had to go through mastectomy for one reason or the other. This way, women can gain back their self-confidence, sexuality, feminity, not to mention their physical looks. The majority of women, who have a mastectomy, also have this procedure.

Timing of the reconstruction of breasts

The procedure is performed by a plastic surgeon and it can take place right after mastectomy or sometime after it. In the majority of the cases, women opt for the immediate procedure. Nonetheless the timing of the surgery depends on your particular situation and the treatment you will have after the surgery.

Not all the patients can have immediate breast reformation. This is why it is very important to discuss the options that you have with your oncologist, breast surgeon or plastic surgeon. If you have radiation therapy, you should also talk to your radiation oncologist.

Benefits of breast reconstruction

The best thing about this surgery is that it makes women feel better about themselves and it offers them the confidence that they need. Nonetheless we have to add that the reconstructed breasts never look or feel like the original breasts.

Types of the reformation of breasts

The methods to perform the procedure include the use of implants, fat, skin and muscle from your body or having a combination of the mentioned methods. For each method, there are pros and cons. The truth is that there is no best method.

For instance, when it comes to breast reconstruction you should know that the implants don’t need such an extensive surgery, but the end results are less natural than in case you used your own tissues. It is also possible that your anatomy and body shape will also influence the type of surgery you need.

This is something that only your plastic surgeon can tell you about. However, usually women are happy with the end results. Since the surgeons use the latest technologies, the chances of having some kinds of complications are very small.

The breast reconstruction usually needs more steps. Regardless whether you have the surgery right after mastectomy or not, you will still need to stay at the hospital. The follow-up procedures that you need can be done on an outpatient basis.

Smoking

Keep in mind regarding the rehabilitation of the breasts and smoking that no matter what kind of procedure you choose, your chances of having complications are higher. If you are a smoker, this is something that you should discuss with your doctor.

Implants

If you choose the breast reconstruction with implants, you can expect to have a relatively simple procedure. In this case you don’t need extra hospital stay and it can be done right after the mastectomy. The downside is that the end result won’t look exactly like the other breast. Also remember that as you age the natural breasts will change their shape, while the implants will have the same shape, so this might not be an option for you.
