Before cameras were readily available, Tel-Avivians went to the Pri-Or PhotoHouse to document their memories. Now Sternthal Books has started an important initiative to digitize many of the portraits in the studio to make a book, an ebook, and exhibitions.

Over seven years ago Ian Sternthal stumbled upon The Pri-Or PhotoHouse in Tel-Aviv on Allenby Street. He walked in out of curiosity, attracted by the amazing black and white images in the window display, but upon talking with Miriam Weissenstein about her life, and the photo studio she founded with her husband Rudi in 1940, he started coming back to film her. Miriam’s dream was to create a book of the many faces that were photographed in their studio, and for the last few years he has been engaged in the process of scanning portraits with the goal of creating a book, a digital book that will include the video footage he have shot, and travelling exhibitions.

To date he has scanned over 3,000 negatives, but In order to realize both his and Miriam’s dream, he has turned to Kickstarter to help fund this incredible undertaking.

To date he has scanned over 3,000 negatives, but In order to realize both his and Miriam’s dream, he has turned to Kickstarter to help fund this incredible undertaking. As part of the Kickstarter, Sternthal Books will be mounting an exhibition with the support of Size Doesn’t Matter, of black and white photographs that document Israel’s development, alongside a screening of the film ‘Life In Stills’ by Tamar Tal, which tells the story of Miriam Weissenstein, who never imagined that she would be facing a new chapter in her life at age 96. But when “The Photo House” – her late husband Rudi’s life’s work – was destined for demolition, even this opinionated and uncompromising woman knew she needed help. Under the cloud of a family tragedy, a special relationship is forged between Miriam and her grandson, Ben, as they join forces to save the shop and its nearly one million negatives that document Israel’s defining moments. Despite the generation gap and many conflicts, Ben and Miriam embark on a heart-wrenching journey, comprising many humorous and touching moments.

Check out the Kickstarter campaign at bit.ly/zalmania – and in exchange for your support you will receive valuable rewards – like photographic prints, posters, postcards, or copies of the book! Help them spread the word about this important project.
