March ES News from Mr. Art

Dear ES Families,

It’s hard to believe it is already March and we only have three months left in the school year.  Out students and teachers are working very hard to get ready for our ES school-wide writing prompt.  As I walk around our school, and visit each classroom, I am so proud of our teachers and students. It is wonderful to see how much effort they are all putting forward. Each classroom is busy throughout the day creating memorable moments of learning with a clear focus on student success. I am looking forward to the next few months of learning.

In Language Arts, our teachers and students K-5 are just completing their baseline assessments in reading. They also have been working on both reading and writing using the Workshop Methods.  Some of the key reading elements that we have been focusing on is reader stamina, fluency, and note taking while reading. During writing our focus has been on writing short narrative stories and writing for longer periods of time, which will help with building stamina.  Students will be moving into different genres in reading and will work on developing theories around characters and how they affect their stories. Please help support our readers by making sure your child reads everyday as part of their homework. With your support for reading outside the classroom, together we can send the message to our children that reading is essential in today’s world

We are also moving forward in Math through all Grades K-5. The main focus has been in the area of place value, number sense, addition & subtraction, and the division of numbers. Students are building fluency, as well as using various strategies to solve equations involving multi-digit whole numbers. Students at all levels are encouraged to explain and prove their thinking. Our teachers introduce and encourage students with a variety of techniques and strategies to build a strong understanding of mathematics.

Be assured that everyone at SIS Elementary is working very hard to provide each of our students with the knowledge and confidence needed to be successful. We realize, too, that our dedicated parents are busy at home preparing their student as well!   Thank you for being involved and supportive of your children.

ELEMENTARY PROJECTS TO ASSIST OUR COMMUNITY

We are excited to announce that the 5th Grade Spirit club will be hosting a toiletry drive for Anna’s House. Anna’s House is a homeless shelter located in Moran.

We have placed boxes on every floor of the elementary building for students to place donations. Now all we need is for your child to donate toiletries such as: brand new shampoos, soaps, deodorant, toothpaste, toothbrushes, and men’s socks for Anna’s house. Students can start bringing in items starting tomorrow. It will officially start on March 2 until March 21. Please participate in the toiletry drive and let your students know about this great opportunity to donate to a good cause.

Thank you for your support! The 5th grade Spirit Club

Please contact Ms. Goodrich or Ms. Schuppel if you have any questions regarding this community event.  We are hopeful to have many families participate in this activity!

We have had a great year so far and we are confident that this will continue throughout the remainder of the school year.  With students, staff and parents working together, great things will continue to happen for students in our school.  I appreciate the opportunity to work with your children on a daily basis!

Sincerely,

Mr. Art
