D-Day 70th Anniversary Concert Royal Pavilion, Brighton

Seventy years ago today, the largest armada in history set sail across the English Channel into the teeth of ferocious German resistance to establish a beachhead at Normandy. It marked the beginning of the end of the Second World War. A celebration of the gung-ho spirit that replaced the Blitz one is celebrated at the Brighton Fringe, as the Victory Wind Quintet plays music to evoke the period, such as Eric Coates’s march The Dambusters and Vera Lynn favourite We’ll Meet Again. Feel free to come in period dress. (Part of the Sounds of War – Instruments of Peace series.)

LSO/Kavakos Barbican Hall, London

The Greek violinist Leonidas Kavakos is both soloist and conductor with the London Symphony Orchestra in a concert exploring works by Beethoven. It begins with the overture Prometheus – whose main theme finds its way into the final movement of Symphony No.3 (‘Eroica’), which concludes the programme. In between, cellist Tim Hugh and pianist Enrico Pace join in for Beethoven’s Triple Concerto.
