Diapers are an indispensable part of having a baby. For most parents, buying and changing and washing them becomes routine. But if you’re a parent of a premature baby, diapers carry their own unique challenge: Namely that even “Premature” size diapers are often much too large for preemies’ tiny little bodies. That’s why Huggies has come out with the new Little Snuggler Nano Preemie diaper.
Specifically made for babies weighing under two pounds, the Nano Preemie diaper is Huggies’ smallest offering yet. The diapers are specially designed to protect the delicate skin of premature babies, a common issue when it comes to diapers.
While there are plenty of preemies born every year, fewer than 2 percent of them weigh under two pounds, and Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICUs) have struggled with finding diapers for this subset of the newborn population. To help design the Nano Preemie, Huggies worked alongside NICU nurses and neonatal therapists to develop the right fit and materials.

The Nano Preemie has an ultra-soft liner and gentler leg gatherings that prevent leakage without irritating super-sensitive preemie skin. The inner pad of the diaper is narrower than the conventional version, which helps the baby be easily positioned into a comfortable fetal tuck. Additionally, the diaper fasteners are also specially sized to the diaper.
“Good-fitting diapers are important to the healthy growth and development of our smallest patients,” said Anjanette Lee, an infant development specialist at Memorial Hermann Southwest Hospital in Houston, Texas in an interview. She was part of one of nine Level III and Level IV NICUs that tested the diaper.
NICU nurses (not to mention parents) have enough to worry about when it comes to caring for tiny preemies. It’s nice that making a too-large diaper work on a preemie’s tiny body will now be one task off their plates.
