Officers used stun grenades as they stormed the flat on Wednesday morning after reports a man had attacked two women before inflicting stab wounds on himself.

A woman thought to be in her 30s died at the scene in Leasowes Drive, in the Merry Hill area of the city, while the male suspect, also in his 30s, was pronounced dead shortly afterwards.

Another woman, believed to be in her 50s, has been taken to hospital in a critical condition with stomach injuries and a police officer sent to the scene was treated for minor injuries.

Images from the scene showed three air ambulances landed on a nearby playing field and armed officers outside the block of flats.

Residents had been ordered out of the flats as the police operation took place, the Wolverhampton Express and Star reported.

A nearby primary school was also on lockdown after the attack.

A spokesman for West Midlands Ambulance Service said: “A man and woman estimated to be in their 30s had suffered very serious stab wounds.

“Sadly, despite best efforts by ambulance staff, it was not possible to save either of them and they were confirmed dead at the scene.”

The spokesman added that a woman was taken to the major trauma centre at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham with potentially life-threatening stab wounds.

The injured police officer was assessed by ambulance staff and discharged after treatment on his arm.
