Container data management provider ClusterHQ today announced the promotion of a tech veteran with a track record of selling successful startups to the CEO position. Mark Davis takes the ClusterHQ reins from founding CEO Luke Marsden, who will continue as company CTO and head of product. Marsden said Davis’s progressive vision and extensive experience in the data center infrastructure market “has been instrumental to the development of ClusterHQ,” and its Flocker data volume and container manager, which runs databases, key-value stores and queues inside Docker.

ClusterHQ’s chairman since June 2014, Davis was previously CEO of Virsto Software, a Sunnyvale, Calif.-based company he co-founded in 2007 which was acquired by VMware in February 2013, an acquisition that was described by Wikibon CTO and co-founder David Floyer as a way for VMware to “become the Microsoft of software-led infrastructure.” (For Floyer’s full analysis of VMware’s acquisition of Virsto, click here or scroll down to the video at the end of this story). Before founding Virsto, Davis served as CEO of Creekpath Systems (acquired by Opsware, which was acquired by HP), and held VP positions at several startups including Evolve Software (acquired by Oracle) and ConvergeNet Technologies (acquired by Dell).

Cloud database company Clustrix also named a veteran of numerous acquisitions to the corner office this week. The San Francisco-based company named Mike Azevedo as CEO, replacing Robin Purohit, who recently joined BMC Software, Inc. Clustrix also yesterday announced that tech veteran Bruce Armstrong will be the new executive chairman of its board of directors.

Clustrix is a provider of a scale-out SQL database engineered for the cloud; its database is designed for transactional workloads and real-time analytics. Azevedo previously held positions at Platform Computing, a systems management developer that was acquired by IBM, as well as ParAccel, Inc. (acquired by Actian Corp.), PostX Corp.  (acquired by IronPort and late by Cisco) and Veritas Software Corp. (acquired by Symantec Corp.).

Armstrong has years of management experience in technology companies such as Teradata. Armstrong has also served on numerous boards including Accrue, BuyMedia, NetVendor, TechWeb and WibiData.
