The International Centre for Evidence in Disability (ICED), along with support from Sightsavers, CBM, the International Committee of the Red Cross, and Handicap International will be hosting an International Symposium on ‘Disability in the SDGs: Forming Alliances and Building Evidence for the 2030 Agenda’ on 18 and 19 February 2016.

The two day symposium brings together researchers, activists and practitioners to discuss new research findings and debate academic and policy issues related to global disability and health. The objective is to form alliances, build evidence and maintain momentum in the field of global disability and development.

Topics for the symposium include:

– Evidence on inclusive development and universal access

– Measuring disability inclusion

– Evidence of best practice in disability programmes

Juliet Milgate, Director of Policy and Advocacy at Sightsavers, and Co-chair of Bond DDG will be chairing a plenary on disability measurement and said of the conference: ‘We would like to thank ICED for hosting this symposium, which takes place at an important time for disability inclusion following the agreement of the sustainable development goals last year. It us up to all of us to ensure that we leave no-one behind in the 2030 agenda and we are looking forward to learning and sharing knowledge at this important event.’

Emma Jolley, Technical Advisor: Health and Disability Research at Sightsavers, will be presenting on Disaggregating routine monitoring data by disability: an example of eye health.

Marion Steff, Policy Advisor on Inclusion, and Margo Greenwood, Research Associate: Education and Social Inclusion at Sightsavers will be sharing an update on the Voices of the Marginalised project. Presented only a couple of weeks ago at the 54th Session of the Commission for Social Development in New York, Marion and Margo will be sharing the project’s latest findings from the participatory research in Tanzania in to age and disability.

Chairs Allen Foster (ICED), and Dom Haslam, Director of Policy and Advocacy at Sightsavers, will be wrapping up this busy day with a call to action for all of those taking part.
