The Manitoba government is creating public distrust in the scientific community’s ability to keep people safe with its proposed cosmetic pesticide ban, says the president of Keystone Agricultural Producers.

Legislation was introduced this week that will prohibit the application of synthetic weed control products on lawns and in many public places starting in 2016.

KAP’s Doug Chorney says he’s worried the province is telling Manitobans they shouldn’t have faith in the scientific process that Health Canada uses to approve pesticides.

“It’s definitely a concern when you see governments ignoring the advice of our science community that we’ve relied on for many things in our daily life for decades. We’re really just seeing government policy makers respond to activists,” he says.
