Summer 2016: Roundup of Free (or Almost Free) Outdoor Activities and Events in Long Beach

Long Beach is THE place to be this summer!

From movies in the park to an amazing selection of outdoor festivals, there are so many fun things to do this summer in Long Beach! And the best part? Most of them are totally free!

720 Pine – Enjoy live skateboard stunts, live music, and beer ‘n’ grub at this festival at 7th Street and Pine Ave. on Saturday, June 25 starting at 2:30 p.m. Get more details here.

Pirate Invasion – Join 100’s of pirates at an everything pirate related festival on June 25 and June 26 at Belmont Veterans Memorial Pier. Kids and adults welcome! Admission is free.

Twisted at the Pike: Enjoy “creepy carny folk” entertainment at this carnival at the Pike on Saturday, July 9 from 5 – 11 p.m. There will also be live music, fire belly dancing, magicians, food vendors, and a beer garden

Noah Kalama Outrigger Classic – Watch over 800 entrants race 6-man and one-man outrigger canoes on a measured 500-meter straightaway at Marine Stadium on Saturday, July 9 from 8:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.

Beach Soccer Tournament: This free 5V5 tournament includes a carnival beach party with Brazilian style barbecue, food vendors, music, rides, and entertainment. It’s free to play but you must register in advance. Game days is July 9. Email lbpl.mobile@gmail.com to reserve your spot.

Love Long Beach Festival: Just like the name suggests, this festival celebrates all the wonderful things about Long Beach – art, music, fitness, organic food, and much more! The event is on July 17th at Granada Beach beginning at 9 a.m. and admission is free.

Dragon Boat Races: In addition to the race at Marine Stadium, there will be traditional Chinese art demonstrations, acrobatics, dance, music, food, and more! The festival goes all weekend long starting on Saturday, July 30 and admission is free.

Sand Sculpture & Art & Music Festival: For the 84th year in a row, watch the pros turn sand into art on August 13th and 14th at Granada Beach.

Tiki Beach Festival: The 15th annual festival includes Polynesian music and dance performances as well as a craft fair and yummy food from the Aloha Food Court! Admission is free on Saturday August 20 – 21 at Granada Beach.

Buskerfest: Known as a “launch pad for the careers of local musicians,” this competition features thousands of dancers and musicians who perform on stages set up on flatbed trucks. The free festival is on September 3 in the East Village Arts District.

Swimming

Cool off from the hot temperatures with a dip in the Belmont Plaza Pool for $4.00 or less.

Mondays and Fridays: 5:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. (long course noon – 1:00)

Tuesdays and Thursdays: 7:00 – 9:00 p.m.

Saturdays: 8:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.

Supervised Park Activities

Summer Fun Days and BE S.A.F.E are free programs offered by the Long Beach Parks and Recreation Department. The programs are broken up into different age groups and offer supervised activity time at parks throughout Long Beach. Archery

Take an archery class at El Dorado park for just $5.00. Get the class schedule here.

Harbor Cruise

For just $12 dollars, enjoy a one hour cruise on the beautiful Long Beach harbor. You can also choose a dinner cruise  or the Murder Mystery Harbor Cruise on Friday and Saturday nights. Call 572-432-4900 for tickets and more information

Roller Hockey

In addition to regularly scheduled leagues, Bayshore Roller Hockey Rink offers pick-up games for $6 dollars a session. The schedule is posted at the rink but you can also call 570-1736 for times.

Bike

From the Shoreline bike path to the loop through El Dorado Regional Park, Long Beach has a beautiful selection of places to go for a ride. Don’t have a bike? No problem. Rent one for $7.00 an hour with Long Beach Bike Share.
