Huel is a complete and nutritionally balanced powdered food that contains everything you would expect in a healthy meal.

Co-founded by nutrition and health expert – James Collier and Julian Hearn, Collier states that Huel even contains 100% of the EU’s recommended daily amounts of essential vitamins.

But what is the point I hear you ask?

Hearn says Huel is not supposed to be a full replacement for every meal, but as a substitute for the junk meals we eat when we don’t have time to plan properly

“There’s more fibre in Huel than most Western diets,” says Hearn. “We’d like everyone to eat whole food and a proper, balanced diet, but a lot of people don’t know what a calorie is, let alone an amino acid.”

Huel is made up of a mixture of oats, pea protein, rice protein, vitamins and minerals and a sweetener.

There are two choices of Huel – a vanilla flavour and one that is unflavoured with no sweetener. There are also flavour packets that can be added to both choices of Huel: Strawberry, Chocolate, Banana, Pineapple & Coconut, Mocha, Toffee, Rhubarb and Custard.

If you order Huel it comes in a big bag with a scoop and details of how to use it.

You should first use the online calorie counter to work out how many calories you require a day, then you can decide how many Huel meals you are going to have and how many ordinary meals and work out the calories from that.

One scoop of Huel equates to around 156 calories and can be used as a drink, or a flour to create simple dishes such as pancakes.

So far, the concept of Huel meals seems to be pretty popular, as around 400,000 packets have been sold since June, all over the world.

It helps that the people behind the idea have had long backgrounds in nutrition and that they also have the backing of other dieticians:

“Huel is a nutritionally complete product and is therefore a suitable option for a meal replacement.

“In addition to all essential vitamins and minerals, it also contains a good fatty acid profile including omega-3, monounsaturated fat and middle chain triglycerides.” Says Rachel Clare, a registered dietician.

“Furthermore, Huel meets the recommended intake for fibre provided the consumer meets their full calorie requirement with Huel,” she added.

Huel is also 100% vegan, has a shelf life of 12 months and contains less than a teaspoon of sugar in every 2000 calories.

It takes only a few minutes to mix up a batch of Huel, which means you can have all your dietary requirements ready to go and not have to resort to eating junk food because your body is craving fat or sugar later on in the day.

Huel could also help to solve the food wastage problem. Here in the UK, we throw away around 30% of all our food. The world produces over one and a half times the amount to feed everyone yet around 800 million people are starving or suffering from malnutrition.

In countries where we do throw out food, the population are getting more obese, with children now fatter than their parents and the risk of contracting type 2 diabetes ever higher.

“Almost two in every three people in the UK are overweight or obese and are therefore at increased risk of Type 2 diabetes,” said Chris Askew, Chief Executive of Diabetes UK.

Huel could help to stop the obesity epidemic by moving away from junk food and eating a more nutritionally balanced diet.

And there is another reason Huel might be the answer to health problems. As someone who has to take medication for the prevention of migraines, one of the side-effects is a complete loss of appetite.

Although you may think this is a bonus, in real life, what it means is that I never want to eat and quite often it gets to early morning and I have not eaten and then I will feel very ill and weak. I just do not have any appetite or the will to eat. Having something like Huel, which I can just drink down quickly, knowing I am getting everything I need is a Godsend.

Likewise, to people that are ill and do not want to eat, this could be the first step to recovery.

Huel costs £45 for 28 meals, £84 for 48 meals and £162 for 112 meals.
