A few days ago, my fellow mom bloggers and I had such a great time at the gathering of mommas organized by PLDT Home called “Mommy’s Day Out”. Hosted by celebrity moms Isabel Oli and Denise Laurel and attended by other celebrities like Camille Parts and Issa Litton, the intimate and candid event was filled with parenting tips, fun “chika” and heartwarming mommy sharing.
I felt so blessed to be invited in the gathering, I must say. Being a mom in this digital age, I’m glad to have learned some valuable tips on how I can successfully manage my home using technology.
Straight from renowned psychologist, guidance counselor, lecturer and author Michele S. Alignay, I was further enlightened about the role and relevance of technology in managing a digital home.
Over cups of tea, my fellow mommas and I were all-ears to Michele as she discussed some practical ways on how to be successful manages of a digital home, such as how to manage the use of gadgets among our kids. With a young boy at home who’s starting to get hooked with iPad, I was so eager to learn from the expert.
“Gadgets are not a right. They’re privileges.” Mommy Michele stressed. As parents, we’re recommended to set internal regulations on the use of gadgets at home. “It is our responsibility to teach kids how to balance their media time and unplug time.” She added.
I couldn’t agree more. While we should not totally ban the use of gadgets to our kids because they will be left out from their generation otherwise, it’s important that we set appropriate limits.
Inculcating to our kids’ minds that the use of gadget is just a privilege, we are actually teaching them to unplug and enjoy the real life instead. “If kids feel gadget use is their right, we are planting the seeds of making them ‘entitled’ to anything they may want!” Mommy Michele reminded us. And she added, “Development of critical skills are maximized through real life engagements.”
