Available today on Blu-ray and DVD is the film Odd Thomas, based on the New York Times Bestseller by the same name written by Dean Koontz. There are a few books in the Odd Thomas series.

Odd Thomas stars Anton Yelchin as Odd Thomas. His name is really Odd. He should have been named Todd but there was a goof up in the maternity ward and they put his name down as “Odd” instead. The name is actually fitting for Odd and his abilities.

Odd Thomas is able to see dead people and spirits. It’s not something he enjoys being able to do. It’s a gift he got from his mother who had similar abilities (people thought she was crazy).

Odd uses his abilities to help solve crimes as well as to help out spirits who are stuck here for some reason. The film starts off with Odd helping a young murder victim by capturing her killer and getting him arrested.

The town’s sheriff, Wyatt Porter (Willem Dafoe) is aware of Odd’s abilities and is happy to help him assisting the Police Department in solving crimes. He helps Odd by covering things up so no know questions as to how Odd knew about things that the Police couldn’t find out.

Odd has a long time girlfriend named Stormy Llewellyn. Odd and Stormy feel like they are destined to be together because a arcade psychic told them that they would.

One day at work Odd sees these scary creatures called “Bodachs” appear in the diner where he works. Bodachs are predators that feed off pain. Usually there is only one, which means that someone is going to die. This day Odd sees dozens of Bodachs. He’s never seen that many before.

Not only is Odd seeing Bodachs all over town he’s also being approached by spirits asking him for help.

Something of epic proportions is going to happen to the townspeople – something that will result in hundreds of deaths. It’s up to Odd to figure out what it going on and how to stop it.

Will Odd figure out what is going to happen before it’s too late? Will Odd end up perishing along with many other townspeople? To find out you need to pick up a copy of Odd Thomas, available today (March 25, 2014) where most movies are sold.

I had the opportunity to review the movie. Prior to this I have never heard of Odd Thomas or Dean Koontz’s Odd Thomas books.

I like horror movies and movies that are creepy with cool special effects. This isn’t really a horror movie, but it does have fun special effects.

Check out the trailer (below) and you’ll see why I wanted to review this film.

The movie started off really good. I liked the special effects and the whole premise of the film. About half way through it started to drag a bit but then it picked up again.

This is not a horror movie. The Bodachs are creepy looking but that is about it. There is no nudity, I don’t recall any foul language and it’s not really graphic. The film is unrated but I would give it a PG-13 rating only because the Bodachs might be a little intense for younger children.

This is a fun movie. I think it’s an odd thing to say, but I thought it was fun. There is a bit a humor mixed in too.

I have the DVD copy and there were no bonus features. I’m not sure if the Blu-ray has any bonus features or not.

My only issue is the ending. It did not end the way I thought it would. My husband had a feeling he knew how it would end (he was right) but I didn’t see that ending coming. I’m actually very saddened by the ending. I wish it ended differently. Once you see the movie you’ll know why.

Have you read the Odd Thomas books? Do you think you’ll check out this film? Feel free to share your thoughts.
