Sheridan College to host renowned leaders for Insight Lectures

The Sheridan College Foundation is presenting “Insight: The Sheridan College Lecture & Workshop Series.” Created to inspire innovative thought, action and potential in everyone’s lives, three internationally renowned leaders in the field of personal development will be coming to Sheridan.

The first lecture and workshop in the Insight series will be presented and led by Chuck Dymer, who has taught the principles of Dr. Edward de Bono for 25 years. Dr. de Bono is the father of lateral thinking and the theory that the brain does not organize thought; thought organizes the brain. Chuck will discuss ways to train the brain to enhance flexible and fluid thinking.

Study groups will be organized the week of Feb. 10, to read and discuss the book “How to Have a Beautiful Mind” by Edward de Bono. Dymer’s lecture, “Training the Brain,” will be on Friday, Feb. 28, from 7 p.m. to 7:45 p.m. inside the Whitney Presentation Hall. This will be followed by a reception and book signing at the Whitney Academic Center at Sheridan College.

“Training the Brain: a Workshop to Strengthen Thinking” will be led by Dymer on Saturday, March 1, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Edward A. Whitney Academic Center.

Michael Gelb, the author of “How to Think Like Leonardo da Vinci,” will be the second speaker. His lecture, “Trusting Intuition,” will be April 25, from 7-7:45 p.m. in the Whitney Presentation Hall, and the workshop will be held on April 26. His research includes the qualities of Leonardo da Vinci and how those qualities made da Vinci one of the most creative geniuses to have lived.

Dr. Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi will be the final speaker. His lecture, “Finding Flow,” will be May 16, and the workshop will be held on May 17.

His book, “Flow: The Psychology of the Optimal Experience,” provides the basic principles necessary to understand and implement a creative attitude to life at the individual and institutional levels. He draws on decades of research on flow to describe the essential ingredients for a creative life: the ability to control one’s attention and the cultivation of a complex personality.

The format is identical for each event and is designed to provoke long-lasting effects for participants.

• Study groups will be formed to collectively discuss the featured reading material from the incoming speaker a couple weeks prior to the event.

• Each lecture will be a Friday night from 7:00-7:45 p.m. followed by a reception and a book signing.

• The corresponding workshop will be the next day from 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

• All lectures will be held at Sheridan College’s Whitney Presentation Hall and all workshops will be in the Whitney Academic Center.

• The study groups and lectures are free. The workshops are for $50 if participating in a study group or $75 without study group participation.
