GLOSSARY OF ESOTERIC TERMSAge ― World cycle, approximately 2,150 years, determined by the relation of the earth, sun and constellations of the zodiac.Ageless Wisdom ― An ancient body of spiritual teaching underlying all the world’s religions as well as all scientific, social and cultural achievements. First made available in writing to the general public in the late 1800s by Helena Petrovna Blavatsky and in this century by Alice A. Bailey, Helena Roerich, and Benjamin Creme. [See the Ageless Wisdom Teachings ― in brief, for further details.]Ajna center – The energy center (chakra) between the eyebrows. Directing center of the personality. Its correspondence on the physical level is the pituitary gland.Alchemy – refers to a medieval quest for an elixir or kimia, capable of turning copper and other base metals to gold. Alchemy is both a philosophy and an ancient practice focused on the attempt to accomplish this transmutation, investigating the preparation of the “elixir of longevity”, and achieving ultimate wisdom, involving the improvement of the alchemist as well as the making of several substances described as possessing unusual properties.Angels – The gnostic and later also Christian term of devas. The archangels are the seven highest devas of our planet (43-selves) who preside over their respective departments in the deva hierarchy.Animism -Wicca is a form of Animism. Animism is a belief that the Divine power or force exists within everything in the physical universe. Believers are known as Animists.Antahkarana – An invisible channel of light forming the bridge between the physical brain and the soul, built through meditation and service.Apothecary – One who prepares and sells drugs or compounds for medicinal purposes. In wiccan / pagan terms it is one who possesses the knowledge to heal the wounded and the sick with natural elements & herbs (herbalist).Aromatherapy – is a form of alternative medicine that uses volatile plant materials, known as essential oils, and other aromatic compounds for the purpose of altering a person’s mind, mood, cognitive function or health.Ashram – A Master’s group. In the Spiritual Hierarchy there are 49 ashrams, seven major and 42 subsidiary, each headed by a Master of Wisdom.Astral body – The emotional vehicle of an individual.Astral plane – The plane of the emotions, including the polar opposites such as hope and fear, sentimental love and hate, happiness and suffering. The plane of illusion. A different plain of existence from that inhabited by humans, said to be where spirits live.Astral projection – (or astral travel) is an interpretation of one form of out-of-body experience (OBE) that assumes the existence of an “astral body” separate from the physical body and capable of traveling outside it.Astral projection or travel denotes the astral body leaving the physical body to travel in the astral plane.Astrology – is the study of correlations of celestial events with behavior on earth, particularly correlations which cannot be explained by gravitation, magnetism, or other forces that are well-established in physics or other sciences.Athame or Athamé – is a ceremonial dagger, it is one of several magical tools used in neopagan religions and various Witchcraft traditions. An athame can take many forms. It frequently has a double-edged blade and is used in ceremonies to cast a circle and is part of an altar. Rituals involving drawing lines, either visually or physically are best done with an Athame. The handle may be inscribed with particular symbols dictated by the tradition. There are rituals of consecration for a newly acquired athame, be it new, or acquired from another person.When purchasing a knife for this purpose (or any ritual tool) it is considered important never to haggle over the price. As it’s primary use is to direct energy it should be made of pure materials.Atomic Consciousness – Atomic consciousness is world consciousness. The individual as a joint owner of a consciousness collective is like a cell in an organism. The organism is an envelope of an individual in a higher kingdom. When in the collective consciousness of his world the individual has so developed that he can take over this material world as an envelope of his own, then he will be a ‘god’ of this world.Aura – is a field of subtle, luminous radiation surrounding a person or object. The depiction of such an aura often connotes a person of particular power or holiness. Sometimes, however, all people, or all living things, or all objects whatsoever are said to manifest such an aura. Often it is held to be perceptible, whether spontaneously or with practice: such perception is at times linked with the tht third eye of Indian spirituality. Various writers associate various personality traits with the colors of different layers of the aura.Avatar – A spiritual Being who descends in answer to mankind’s call and need. There are human, planetary and cosmic Avatars. The latter would be called ‘Divine Incarnations.’ Their teaching, correctly apprehended and gradually applied by humanity, expands our understanding and presents the next step forward in mankind’s evolutionary development.Besom Witches Broom – A broom decorated with cleansing herbs of sage, parsley & rosemary to cleanse the ritual space before working magic.Book of Shadows or (Grimoire)- a collection of works describing witchcraft rituals. Initially, when Wicca was still dominated by covens, “only one copy [of the Book] existed for an entire coven, kept by the high priestess or high priest. Over time this proved unfeasible and each witch had their own copy, the book was burned after a person died, so that it would not be discovered that they had been a witch. An individual (solitary) witch writes their own book of shadows based on personal favourite chants, spells, recipes, core rituals and practises.Buddha – Last Avatar of the age of Aries. Previous World Teacher who manifested through the prince Gautama around 500 BC. The Embodiment of Wisdom, He currently acts as the ‘Divine Intermediary’ between Shamballa and Hierarchy. Buddhists expect their next great teacher under the name Maitreya Buddha.Buddhi – The universal soul or mind; higher reason; loving understanding; love-wisdom. The energy of love as the Masters experience it.Buddhic plane – Plane of divine intuition.Cauldron – Large pot or bowl, usually black and made from cast iron. Used for cooking in magical foods and water scrying.Causal body – The vehicle of expression of the soul on the causal plane. The receptacle where consciousness of one’s evolutionary point of development is stored.Causal plane – The third of the four higher mental planes on which the soul dwells.Celestial – Celestial pertains to the visible heavens or the sky. A celestial body is a heavenly body, such a planet. A celestial is often personified or considered to be a living being, rather than an object.Celestial Event – is any event in the sky. For example, the Sun rising is a celestial event, or any two planets appearing in the same place in the sky is a celestial event. The celestial event can involve any celestial body, whether it be the Sun, Moon, a planet, an asteroid, comet, star, black hole, quasar, or other celestial object.Chakras – Energy centers (vortices) in the etheric body related to the spine and the seven most important endocrine glands. Responsible for the coordination and vitalization of all the bodies (mental, astral and physical) and their correlation with the soul, the main center of consciousness. There are seven major chakras and 42 lesser ones.Channelling – (mediumistic) A term used in reference to the esoteric process of receiving messages or inspiration from invisible beings or spirits.Charge of the Goddess – Invocational verse based on mediæval Tuscan witches’ ritual. This has been rewritten several times in the 20th century by Wiccans.Clan – Group of monads that are at the same stage of development and incarnate together.Clairvoyance – Objective consciousness in the emotional and mental worlds. Acute intuitive insight or perceptiveness. The supposed power to see objects or events that cannot be perceived by the senses. Cleansing – Spiritual cleaning removing negativity. Herbs have restorative properties and are often used in cleansing rituals.Coven – in olden times, claimed to be a group of thirteen witches. Nowadays used to describe any group or meeting of Wiccans or Witches.Deity – is a recognised preternatural or supernatural immortal being, who may be thought of as holy, divine, or sacred, held in high regard, and respected by believers, often religiously referred to as a god/goddess.Deva – Angel or celestial being belonging to a kingdom in nature evolving parallel to humanity, and ranging from sub-human elementals to super-human beings on a level with a planetary Logos. They are the ‘active builders,’ working intelligently with substance to create all the forms we see, including the mental, emotional and physical bodies of humanity.Dharma – Is the innermost nature of every individual, that which constitutes his true being. Dharma is what is given in the interdependent arrangement of things… Dharma is the meaning of life for every individual.Divination – to foresee, to be inspired by a god, related to divinus, divine) is the attempt to gain insight into a question or situation by way of a standardized process or ritual. It is an integral part of witchcraft and has been used in various forms for thousands of years.Druidism – was the religion of the Celtic people that was administered by priests and priestesses called Druids. Remnants of Druidism still presently exist.Elementals – Elementals are “Nature’s Angels” and they are referred to by various names including Fairies, Elves, Devas, Brownies, Leprechauns, Gnomes, Sprites, Pixies as well as many others. An elemental is a mythological being first appearing in the Alchemical works of Paracelsus in the 16th century. Traditionally, there are four types: Gnomes – earth elementals, Undines – water elementals, Sylphs – air elements, Salamanders – fire elementals.Elements – in Alchemy, the world is made of four elements Fire, Water, Air and Earth.Esbat – Esbats are the celebration of the 13 full moons that occur every year. The Esbats are lunar and represent the Goddess at her height of power. These are the times when Her magick is more potent than on any other day of the month.Esotericism – The philosophy of the evolutionary process both in man and the lower kingdoms in nature. The science of the accumulated wisdom of the ages. Presents a systematic and comprehensive account of the energetic structure of the Universe and of man’s place within it. Describes the forces and influences that lie behind the phenomenal world. Also, the process of becoming aware of and gradually mastering these forces.Etheric body – The energetic counterpart of the physical body, composed of seven major centers (chakras) and 49 minor centers, a network which connects all the centers, and infinitesimally small threads of energy (nadis) which underlie every part of the nervous system. Blockages in the etheric body can result in physical illnesses.Etheric planes – Four planes of matter finer than the gaseous-physical. As yet invisible to most people.Evolution – The process of spiritualization of matter; the way back to the Source. The casting aside of the veils of delusion and illusion leading eventually to cosmic consciousness.Fairy – (faery, faerie) an Earth-bound Nature spirit, also a spiritual and chaotic expression of reality. It is a type of mythical being or legendary creature, a form of spirit, often described as metaphysical, supernatural or preternatural.Feng Shui – is related to the concepts of Yin & Yang, and Chi. Proper practice of feng shui is meant to maintain good health, wealth, relationships, creativity and more. The aim of feng shui is to create a living and working (and dying – feng shui is for graveyards, too) environment in harmony with nature and the flow of energy. The details of feng shui relate to position of elements, color and materials. Fountains, mirrors and crystals are particularly important accessories in feng shui. Feng shui literally means “wind-water.”Forces of Light (Forces of Evolution) – The Spiritual Hierarchy of our planet. Planetary center of Love-Wisdom.Forces of Darkness (Forces of Evil, Forces of Materiality) ― The involutionary or materialistic forces which uphold the matter aspect of the planet. When they overstep their role and impinge upon the spiritual progress of humanity, they are designated as evil.God (see also Logos) – The great Cosmic Being Who en-souls this planet, embodying all the Laws and all the energies governed by those Laws, which make up everything that we see and cannot see.Green Man – a pagan deity or symbolic woodland spirit and totem. Often depicted as a head surrounded by oak leaves or painted green, usually carved in wood or stone.Green Witch (Hedge Witch) – A Green Witch is a solitary practitioner of natural magic. Green Witches use nature’s gifts of flowers, plants and herbs for medicinal and magical purpose. They make brews, tea’s and potions and perform magical rituals and spells for the benefit of themselves and others – with harm to none. They tread lightly on the earth and worship Mother Nature, the sun & moon, they also have little or no environmental footprint. Being attuned to nature and treating the Earth gently has always come naturally to any Witch.Great invocation – An ancient formula, translated by Hierarchy for the use of mankind to invoke the energies which will change our world. Translated into many languages, it is used daily by millions of people.Guru – A spiritual teacher.Handfasting – is an alternate form of marriage ceremony. It dates back hundreds of years, and spans several cultures. In some cultures (as in the Scottish Highlands), it was a marriage of a “year and a day”. If at the end of the year, the couple found that they were incompatible, and there were no children, they could part. Otherwise, they could agree to remain together, and the marriage then became a legal and lifelong bond. The binding of hands, which gives us the expression “Tying the Knot,” has been done using ribbon, cord, rope, specially embroidered cloths or handkerchiefs, and many other things.Heathen or (Ásatrú) – One who adheres to the religion of a people or nation that does not acknowledge the God of Judaism, Christianity, or Islam. The ancient Norse Viking religion of Asatru prefer the term “Heathen” or “Pagan”. An adherent of a Neopagan religion that seeks to revive the religious beliefs and practices of the ancient Germanic peoples.Herbalism / Herbalist / Herbology – The art of combining medicinal herbs. The practice of making or prescribing herbal remedies for medical conditions. Practitioners of herbalism may be licensed MDs, naturopaths, or osteopaths. They may also be unlicensed.High Priest / Priestess – Coven leader and teacher.Incantation – Ritual recitation of verbal charms or spells to produce a magic effect. A formula used in ritual recitation; a verbal charm or spell. Words or a formula so chanted.Incarnation – Manifestation of the soul as a three-fold personality, under the Law of Rebirth.Initiation – A ritual, or series of rituals of admission involving an invocation at a coven meeting established for that purpose. A voluntary process whereby successive and graded stages of unification and at-one-ment take place between the man or woman in incarnation, his/her soul, and the divine Monad or spark of God. Each stage confers on the initiate a deeper understanding of the meaning and purpose of God’s Plan, a fuller awareness of his/her part in that Plan, and an increasing ability to work consciously and intelligently towards its fulfillment.Involution – The process whereby spirit descends into matter, its polar opposite.Kabbalah – A body of mystical teachings of rabbinical origin, often based on an esoteric interpretation of the Hebrew Scriptures. A secret doctrine resembling these teachings.Karma – Eastern name for the Law of Cause and Effect. The basic Law governing our existence in this solar system. Every thought, every action that we have and make sets into motion a cause. These causes have their effects, which make our lives, for good or ill. Expressed in biblical terms: As you sow, so shall you reap. In scientific terms: For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.Kitchen Witch (Domestic Goddess) – An informal solitary witch who mainly uses practical magic centering on the home, hearth and family. In the family of Wiccan – Kitchen witchery, however, is a unique form of the Craft, which focuses more on honouring the mundane in life. This involves honouring the Goddess by taking care of hearth and home, from finding sacred meaning in daily household chores to blessing everyday cooking with love and magic. Cookery and food is an integral part of kitchen witchery. The Kitchen Witch honours what she cooks, preparing meals with loving intent. Using fresh ingredients, often from her own garden, she makes magic in the kitchen by creating delicious, seasonal food, herbal remedies, and magic spells. The Kitchen Witch is attuned to the seasons and elements of nature. She grows and eats food in season, and honours the wheel of the year by marking festivals, solstices and equinoxes, although she does not adhere to specific rules or rituals – and with harm to none.Kratophany – a manifestation of Divine power.Krishna – A great Avatar who appeared around 3,000 BC and served as the vehicle of manifestation for the Lord Maitreya during the age of Aries. By demonstrating the need to control the astral/emotional nature, Krishna opened the door to the second initiation. Hindus expect a new incarnation of Krishna at the end of Kali Yuga, the dark age.Law of Attraction – The law of attraction is the attractive, magnetic power of the Universe that draws similar energies together. It manifests through the power of creation, everywhere and in multiple ways. Even the law of gravity is part of the law of attraction. This law attracts thoughts, ideas, people, situations and circumstances.Law of Cause and Effect (Law of Action and Reaction) – See Karma.Logos – God. The Cosmic Being Who ensouls a planet (Planetary Logos), a solar system (Solar Logos), a galaxy (Galactic Logos) and so on to infinity.Lord of the World – See Sanat Kumara.Magic – the principles, practices and knowledge enabling humans to have control over Nature. The expressions of active consciousness affect matter to act as energy. Magic consists in using the knowledge of the pertaining laws of nature and the method of their application affecting physical-etheric material energies by means of mental material energy to bring about changes in the visible molecular kinds Maitreya – The World Teacher for the age of Aquarius. The Christ and head of the Spiritual Hierarchy of our planet. The Master of all the Masters.Manas – Higher mind.Mantram – Formula or arrangement of words or syllables which, when correctly sounded, invokes energy.Masters of Wisdom – Individuals who have taken the fifth initiation, having passed through all the experiences that life in this world offers and, in the process, having acquired total mastery over themselves and the laws of nature. Custodians of the Plan of Evolution and all the energies entering this planet which bring about the fulfillment of the Plan.Medicine wheels – or sacred hoops, were constructed by laying stones in a particular pattern on the ground (in Native American spirituality). The Native American Medicine Wheel was a working model of how to gain an understanding of the delicate structure and balance of life, the relatedness of actions and reactions in the Universe and, how our individual lives played a role in the Creator’s grand scheme. It is a circular symbol of truth, power and knowledge.Meditation – Scientific means of contacting one’s soul and of eventually becoming at-one with the soul. Also the process of being open to spiritual impression and thus to cooperation with the Spiritual Hierarchy.Medium – a person who provides evidence of survival of the human personality beyond the physical state we call death. They provide a link between the two worlds communicating with people who have died through mind-to-mind contact.Mental body – The vehicle of the personality on the mental planes.Mental plane – The plane of the mind where the mental processes take place.Metaphysics – the theoretical philosophy of being and knowing. A person who studies metaphysics attempts to clarify the fundamental notions by which people understand the world, including existence, the definition of object, property, space, time, causality, and possibility.Monad/Self – Pure Spirit reflecting the triplicity of deity: (1) divine Will or Power (the Father); (2) Love-Wisdom (the Son); (3) active Intelligence (the Holy Spirit). The spark of God resident in every human being.Neo-Pagan / Neo-Paganism – Neopaganism is a 20th century religion, which draws upon ancient religious symbols from outside the traditions of the Abrahamic “Religions of the Book” (Islam, Christianity, and Judaism) (but may include them as well), and employs these symbols in a new way for modern needs (hence the prefix “neo-“). It is a “synthesis of historical inspiration and present-day creativity”. “Though it [paganism] draws on the past, it is designed for living in the present”. Neopagans feel that people should believe and do whatever works for them, i.e., whatever helps them to live wisely and well.Norsemen – the Scandinavian people before the Christianization of Scandinavia. Who practise Wiccan/Pagan/Heathen as their religion.Occult – The hidden science of energy (see Esotericism).Ostension – the phenomenon of a legend becoming a real event .Overshadowing – A voluntary cooperative process in which a Master’s consciousness temporarily enters and works through the physical, emotional and mental bodies of a disciple.Pagan / Paganism – Often referred to as a country dweller. But it’s much deeper than that, they are people who worship Nature and recognize the harmony in natural things. Observing the cycles of the earth, sunrise, sunset, the Solstices and Equinoxes, the moon phases. Those who have a belief in or adopt a worldview that there is a Force or Forces around that can guide them when contacted, whether they are called gods or goddesses, elementals, or angels. Those who take responsibility for their words and actions. It means being connected to the “here and now”, living “in the moment”, while working towards goals that improve your life and your world. Being a modern Pagan means to feel in awe of Nature and life. Pagan/Wiccan/Druid/Shaman have relative belief systems.Palmistry – The practice or art of telling fortunes from the lines, marks, and patterns on the palms of the hands.Pantheism – is the view that God is all; the universe, nature, and God are equivalent.Patron Deity – A deity you feel especially close to.Pentacle – a five pointed star in a circle, a Wicca symbol used in ceremonies and magic corresponding to the human head outstretched arms and feet.Pentagram – A five pointed star without a circle, often used interchangeably with the Pentacle. A five petal flower can also be used to symbolize a pentagram.Permanent atoms – The three atoms of matter – physical, astral and mental – around which the bodies for a new incarnation are formed. They retain the vibratory rate of the individual at the moment of death, guaranteeing that the energetic evolutionary status thus far achieved will be carried over into successive lives.Physical Mediumship – is the process whereby someone, in Spirit, works or operates through the mental and physical energies of the medium and causes something physical to happen on the Earth plane. Physical Mediumship is objective in nature; that is, when the phenomena occur, everyone is able to see and/or hear them.”Physical plane – The lowest vibrational states of substance, including: dense physical, liquid, gaseous and etheric matter.Plane – A level of manifestation.Pralaya – A non-mental, non-astral, non-material state of existence somewhere between death and rebirth, where the life impulse is in abeyance. An experience of perfect peace and unending bliss prior to taking the next incarnation. Corresponds to the Christian idea of paradise.Psychic – A person who is extremely sensitive to energies and other worldly entities.Radiesthesia – The theory and practice of dowsing, or diving, using maps and pendulums.Rays – The seven streams of universal divine energy, each the expression of a great Life, whose interaction at every conceivable frequency creates the solar systems, galaxies and universes. Movement of these energies, in spiralling cycles, draws all Being into and out of manifestation, coloring and saturating it with specific qualities and attributes.Rebirth (Reincarnation) – Man is reborn as a man (never as an animal), until he has learned everything he can learn in the human kingdom, and has acquired all the qualities and abilities necessary to enable him to continue his consciousness expansion in the fifth natural kingdom. Rebirth explains both the seeming injustices of life (since in new lives the individual has to reap what he has sown in precious lives) and the innate, latent understanding and the once self-acquired abilities existing as predispositions.Rede / Wiccan Rede – The basic Wiccan moral code… An’ It Harm None, Do As Ye Will.Reiki – Can be defined as a non-physical healing energy made up of life force energy that is guided by the Higher Intelligence, or spiritually guided life force energy. The word Reiki is composed of two Japanese words – Rei and Ki. Rei can be defined as the Higher Intelligence that guides the creation and functioning of the universe. Ki is the non-physical energy that animates all living things. Ki is flowing in everything that is alive including plants, animals and humans.Runes – Runes are letters in a family of ancient alphabets known as runic alphabets. Thousands of examples of runic inscriptions can be found in stones, coins, and artwork, and many Scandinavian countries also boast extensive collections of runic manuscripts. Runes are also used by some people as a tool for divination, since these individuals believe that runes have mysterious powers.Sabbats – There are 8 Sabbats that make up the Wheel of the Year. The Sabbats are solar, seasonal and represent the cycle of birth, life, death and rebirth. These days are Samhain, Yule, Imbolc, Ostara, Beltain, Litha, Lughnasadh, and Mabon.Sanat Kumara – The Lord of the World; the etheric-physical expression of our Planetary Logos who dwells on Shamballa. A great Being, originally from Venus, who sacrificed Himself to become the personality vehicle for the ensouling deity of our planet 18,5 million years ago. The nearest aspect of God that we can know.Satan (Devil) – “the accuser”,is the title of various entities, both human and divine, who challenged the faith of humans in the Hebrew Bible.In Christianity and Islam the title became a personal name, and “Satan” changed from an accuser appointed by God to test men’s faith to the chief of the rebellious fallen angels. Satan/Devil we’re created by the Christian faith, as Witches, Wiccans & Pagans do not believe in Satan/Devil or evil.Self/Monad – The divine spark within every human being.Self-realization – The process of recognizing and expressing our divine nature.Sex Magic – a system of gaining spiritual power by harnessing and preserving sexual energy, one application of sex magic is using the energy of sexual arousal and/or orgasm to visualize an image of a desired result.Shamanism – is an anthropological term referencing a range of beliefs and practices regarding communication with the spiritual world. A practitioner of shamanism is known as a shaman.Alleviating traumas affecting the soul/spirit restores the physical body of the individual to balance and wholeness. The shaman also enters supernatural realms or dimensions to obtain solutions to problems afflicting the community. Shamans may visit other worlds/dimensions to bring guidance to misguided souls and to ameliorate illnesses of the human soul caused by foreign elements. The shaman operates primarily within the spiritual world, which in turn affects the human world. The restoration of balance results in the elimination of the ailment.Shamballa – A center of energy; the major center in the planet. It is located above the Gobi Desert on the two highest etheric planes. From it and through it flows the Shamballa Force, the energy of Will or Purpose. It corresponds to the crown center (chakra).Sigils – symbols endowed with magic qualities [latin – sigillum: seal] A focus of magical energy such as a pentacle or a designated Rune. Sigils may be adopted as amulets, talismans or magic items for use in rituals.Skyclad – Naked for the purpose of ritual magic.Solar Logos – A Divine Being ensouling our solar system.Solitary Witch – A solitary Witch is simply a Wiccan who practices on their own, without the aid of a Coven. They are often referred to as “Kitchen Witches” “Garden Witches” & “Green or Hedge Witches”. They worship the mother earth within the privacy of their own home or on their own property. They may call for a gathering of their closest friends and family during one of the eight Pagan Sabbats. It is during such gatherings that many find mentors and instruction to continue study of their particular faith.Soul (Ego, Higher Self, inner ruler, Christ within, Son of Mind, Solar Angel) – The linking principle between Spirit and matter; between God and His form. Provides consciousness, character and quality to all manifestation in form.Spirit – As used by Maitreya, a term meaning the sum-total of the energies – the life force – animating and vitalizing an individual. Also used, more esoterically, to mean the Monad which reflects itself in the soul.Spirit of Peace or Equilibrium – A cosmic Being who assists the work of Maitreya by overshadowing him with His energy.
