Position Title:                                     Staff Forester

Department and Location:             Forest Resource Development and Sustainable Forestry, Kerrville, TX

Salary:                                                  $ 17.31 per hour

Start Date:                                           January 03, 2017

Major/essential duties of job:        Employee will assist with the implementation of the Texas Oak Wilt Suppression Project (60%), the Forest Stewardship Program (30%) and other projects as assigned (10%).  Some evening and weekend duties and occasional overnight travel are required.  Principal duties include:

Provide public education and information concerning oak wilt identification, prevention, and suppression to individual landowners, homeowner associations, cities/municipalities and various news media. Conduct on-site oak wilt field inspections. Perform annual forest health surveys detection surveys using aerial digital mapping technology.

Assist landowners and homeowner associations, cities/ municipalities with pre-suppression field evaluations, control recommendations, installation of suppression treatments, distribution of cost-share funds, and post-suppression evaluations.

Participate in the Forest Stewardship program by assisting private landowners with forest stewardship plans. Provide educational presentations and/or workshops.  Provide regional guidance and assistance with special projects and assignments as needed.

Occasional Duties: Emergency / Incident Response:  As directed, provide direct program support/assistance to various local, regional, and statewide emergency response efforts including: wildfire, drought, flooding, insect/disease, and others.

Qualifications: B.S. degree in forestry, or, Bachelor’s degree in related field plus Master’s degree in forestry.  Prefer applicant with experience in urban forestry and/or pest management plus basic working computer knowledge including Microsoft Office applications.  Position requires strong working knowledge and proficienncy with various GIS/GPS spatial analysis and digital ortho-imagery applications.  Must have or be able to acquire the following licenses and certification within 30-days of employment:  1) Valid State of Texas driver’s license, and 2) Texas Department of Agriculture non-commercial pesticide applicator’s license.  Candidate must possess excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills, exercise sound judgment, and a demonstrated ability to perform assigned duties with a high degree of professionalism, organization and attention to detail.

Working Conditions: Position may require periodic exposure to harsh environmental conditions such as wind, sunlight, rain and temperature extremes.  Duties will require walking long distances, standing for extended periods, twisting, bending, kneeling, reaching and the lifting and carrying of heavy objects.  Driving of motor vehicle for long distances with overnight stays will be common.

Comments: Office hours are Monday through Friday, 8am to 5pm with occasional evening and weekend duties.  Employment is contingent upon the agency’s verification of credentials and/or other information required by agency procedures, including the completion of a criminal history check. Finalists may be required to furnish a copy of official transcript documenting degree conferred. Texas law requires all males 18-25 show proof of compliance with federal Selective Service law to be eligible for employment.  Position will remain open until filled.
