Duties listed are at the full performance level.

Develops and drafts timber cruise plans. Lays out timber sale boundaries in accordance with environmental assessments and other instruction, considering factors such as transportation system, topography, fuels management, silvicultural objectives, wildlife needs, stream protection and other related resource considerations.

Determines acreage by traverse, map or aerial photograph methods, or Global Positioning System (GPS); Interprets complex silvicultural prescriptions and marking guides to designate harvest timber.

You must possess the Basic Requirements identified below to be considered eligible for this position. Transcripts must be provided for qualifications based on education. Your application or resume must clearly show that you possess the appropriate experience requirements.

For the GS-5 level: One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least GS-4 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private sector. Specialized experience is defined as experience that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled and has equipped your with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position.

Or

Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor’s degree (a) with major study in forestry, range management, agriculture, or a subject-matter field directly related to the position, or (b) that included at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as those shown forestry, agriculture, crop or plant science, range management or conservation, wildlife management, watershed management, soil science, natural resources (except marine fisheries and oceanography), outdoor recreation management, civil or forest engineering, or wildland fire science. No more than 6 semester hours in mathematics is creditable.

Or

Combinations of successfully completed post-high school education-as listed above (in excess of the first 60 semester hours) and specialized experience. The education must have been obtained in an accredited business, or technical school, junior college, college or university with courses related to the occupation of the position.

Specialized Experience is defined as one or more of the following:

Examples of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS-04) include:  independently applied the instructions issued in a cruise plan; traversed harvest unit boundaries, road locations, and determined area; independently applied silvicultural prescriptions and marking guides to designate harvest timber; prepared and computer processed cruise data..

TIME-IN-GRADE REQUIREMENT: If you are a current federal employee in the General Schedule (GS) pay plan and applying for a promotion opportunity, you must meet time-in-grade (TIG) requirements with 52 weeks of service at the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression for the position being filled for the GS-06.
