Position Title: California Sea Grant Extension Aquaculture Specialist
Academic Title:  Academic Coordinator I or II

California Sea Grant, Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO) at UC San Diego (UCSD), is committed to academic excellence and diversity within the faculty, staff, and student body. The California Sea Grant College Program (CASG) seeks a resourceful, innovative professional to appoint to a position as a California Sea Grant Extension Specialist, with a preferred emphasis on marine or estuarine aquaculture (although candidates with freshwater aquaculture expertise will also be considered).  This position will be based in Moss Landing, California at the California State University’s Moss Landing Marine Laboratories (MLML); however the Specialist will be a full-time employee of SIO/UCSD hired in the Academic Coordinator series.  The Specialist will report through the CASG Extension Director to the CASG Director.

Sea Grant Extension

Sea Grant Extension Specialists work individually and as part of a team of specialists distributed throughout California. The role of an Extension Specialist is to develop solutions to high-priority coastal and marine issues, and disseminate information through diverse extension methods. Extension Specialists utilize research as an outreach and education tool. Specialists also organize symposia, workshops, and meetings to help local, regional, state, national, and international audiences identify opportunities and solve problems by engaging community leaders, industry, academics, and agency staff in collaborative projects that facilitate development and lead to better-informed public decisions.

The successful candidate will be expected to develop collaborations with other researchers, organizations, industries, and educators to conduct integrated research, education, and outreach projects.  The Specialist’s activities will integrate with and enrich the MLML academic community, and will involve and promote greater interactions between MLML, other academic marine aquaculture programs, and California’s aquaculture community.  It is a requirement that the Specialist will teach one class a year at MLML as part of the graduate program in marine sciences. The successful applicant will be encouraged to work with and advise graduate students and will have the opportunity to help develop infrastructure, programs, directions and curricula for a new aquaculture center located at MLML. Candidates should include discussion in the cover letter on their teaching philosophy, and discuss possible courses to be taught at MLML.

The Extension Specialist working in this job will have a background in marine or estuarine aquaculture (freshwater expertise considered) and will provide research-based information and leadership in topical areas related to aquaculture husbandry, nutrition, genetics, diseases, systems design, or policy. The Extension Specialist will be expected to obtain external support (grants or contracts) that can contribute to his/her program and the CASG Extension Program budget.  Candidates should include discussion of a research plan in the cover letter that outlines the types of research, and their strategy for student involvement.

This is a full-time, professional academic position. Candidates with a Ph.D. are strongly preferred; a Master’s degree with a minimum 3 years of post-graduate experience may be acceptable as experience equivalent to obtaining the Ph.D.  Some experience with teaching at the college level (either as an instructor or teaching assistant) is desirable. The successful candidate will demonstrate strong potential for accomplishments in areas contributing to diversity, equity and inclusion, and a desire to play a leadership role in advancing UC San Diego and MLML’s commitment to achieving excellence and diversity.
