Position Opening: Associate Director, Georgia Sea Grant College Program

We are seeking an innovative leader with broad programmatic vision and enthusiasm for leadership as well as program implementation, integration and assessment. GA SG supports research, education and marine extension to help people understand, reap benefits from, and wisely manage coastal communities, economies and natural resources.

Duties and Responsibilities: The Associate Director, a non-tenure track public service faculty position, provides assistance in the biennial Sea Grant proposal preparation, implementation and monitoring. This assistance involves preparation of the request for proposals, coordination of the review process, and assembly and submittal of the proposal. The job will also involve monitoring individual funded projects, preparing project reports, and assisting in the preparation of accountability documents and reviews. The Associate Director will assist in strategic planning, coordinate statewide meetings and panels and prepare strategic planning materials. The Associate Director also will serve as liaison for research, education and extension efforts within SG and Marine Extension and promote communication between coastal and “upstate” groups. The position will require extensive travel in order to communicate between various constituencies on the coast, throughout the state and in Athens, where the position is located.

Basic Qualifications: Ph.D. or closely related research, education or extension experience in natural or social sciences of marine, coastal or natural resource disciplines is required. Extremely strong communication skills also are required. The applicant’s record should demonstrate a commitment to improving exchange between research scientists, educators, outreach agents and stakeholders. Applicant must have the ability to work collaboratively with research faculty, educators, students, and outreach and extension agents; familiarity with impact documentation and assessment; ability to supervise and manage staff; ability to organize and facilitate seminars and workshops and to organize peer reviews.   Experience working in a university environment, in multitasking, and in working with multiple constituencies is desirable. Experience working with federal, state, and non-profit groups is also desirable as is experience in business administration. Candidate should have commensurate qualifications for appointment as a Public Service faculty member. Per recent Board of Regents’ policy, the successful candidate will be required to submit to a background investigation.

Other Information: The Georgia Sea Grant College Program is based at the University of Georgia, in Athens. While the Program serves all institutions of higher education in the State of Georgia, it reports to the UGA Vice President for Public Service. The Sea Grant Program works closely with UGA Marine Extension (MAREX), which is located in Athens, Brunswick and Savannah. We expect to fill this position effective October 1, 2014.
