POSITION: Assistant Professor – Silviculture and Forest Vegetation Management

LOCATION: Department of Forest and Rangeland Stewardship, Warner College of Natural Resources, Colorado State University, Fort Collins, Colorado, 80523.

DESCRIPTION: tenure track, 9-month academic faculty position to begin August 16, 2014

 

The Department of Forest and Rangeland Stewardship at Colorado State University invites applications and nominations for a 9-month, full time, tenure track Assistant Professor faculty position. This position is central to the department’s educational programs with most majors requiring at least one core course taught by the incumbent. Research addressed by the position is expected to tangibly relate to research activities  and programs throughout the Department, the State of Colorado, and the Rocky Mountain region.

 

The Department is interdisciplinary with programs of emphasis in forestry, fire science and management, restoration ecology, rangeland ecology, and natural resource policy and planning. The Department’s faculty support the Warner College of Natural Resources and the University in fulfilling the Land Grant Mission in these programmatic areas. The Department offers undergraduate majors in Forestry, Natural Resources Management, and Rangeland Ecology, and offers master of science and doctor of philosophy degrees. The position offers great opportunities for collaboration across campus with faculty and programs in management, ecology, and natural resources, such as the WESTFIRE Research Center, Colorado Forest Restoration Institute, the Graduate Degree Program in Ecology, Natural Resources Ecology Lab, and Center for Environmental Management of Military Lands. QUALIFICATIONS:

Required

·                  Ph.D. with an emphasis in silviculture and forest vegetation management completed, or near completion by August 16, 2014.

·                  Demonstrated ability to conduct research in silviculture and forest vegetation management.

Highly Desirable

·                  Demonstrated experience in and strong commitment to quality teaching in silviculture and forest vegetation management.

·                  Evidence of ability to develop a leadership role in silviculture and forest vegetation management in the department, college and University.

·                  Demonstrated understanding in the application of silvicultural methods to attaining social, ecological and economic objectives.

·                  Proven or evidence of likely success in publishing in refereed, scientific journals.

·                  Proven or evidence of likely success to secure external research funding.

·                  Post doctoral or other advanced research experience.

·                  Field experience related to silvicultural techniques and research.

·                  Familiarity or interest in the potential of silviculture to significantly contribute to the areas of: restoration of forested landscapes, fuels treatment, forest health and forest products in western US forest contexts.

 

 

RESPONSIBILITIES: The appointment is 50% research, 40% teaching and 10% service and outreach. The successful candidate is expected to establish a nationally recognized program of research and scholarship in silviculture and forest vegetation management as demonstrated by success in securing external research funding, publications in leading refereed journals, and graduate student recruitment and training. Teaching responsibilities will include undergraduate core courses in silviculture, forest stand management and forest vegetation management. The incumbent is expected to develop an outreach program to deliver innovative science and technologies to natural resource managers and other stakeholders. Participation in professional, university, and community service is also expected.
