February 21

The big news this week is the announcement of two new bars — one a swanky cocktail spot from the Benjamin Cooper boys, and the other a wine lover’s paradise in the Marina from The Barrel Room team. Meanwhile, the East Bay is getting a few very exciting new spots. Namely, look out for homestyle Brazilian, wood-fired pizza, fast casual Peruvian, and more.

MARINA — An unnamed restaurant concept is in the works from the team behind the classy, wine-centric The Barrel House. They’ll be taking over the former Bin 38/Scotland Yard space at 3232 Scott St. and introducing a menu that will juxtapose each dish with both a complementary and contrasting wine pairing. UNION SQUARE — The owners of Benjamin Cooper are opening a second spot, this one in the newly-rebranded Tilden Hotel (345 Taylor St.) and called The Douglas Room. EMERYVILLE — Fast casual Peruvian food is headed to the Public Market (5959 Shellmound St.) in April at Paradita, offering sandwiches, skewers, rotisserie chicken, rice bowls, salads, and more, daily from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. [Tablehopper]

OAKLAND — A Brazilian restaurant called Paulista will soon be brightening Glenview’s dining scene at 4239 Park Ave. It’s the brainchild of two friends and longtime Oakland residents who plan on pairing traditional homestyle Brazilian fare (think fish and coconut milk stew, chicken and cheese croquettes, as well as açai bowls for breakfast) along with a menu of hyper-local craft brewed beers. MISSION — Sicilian pizza, pasta, and panini is arriving as soon as next week to 64 14th St. via Pink Onion, from the people behind Le Coco in the East Bay. Expect craft beer and wine on tap in a casual environment. [Tablehopper]

OAKLAND — A liquor license has just been successfully obtained by Aisle 5, a new wood-fired pizza restaurant that will soon be opening at 3320 Grand Ave. The restaurant will feature live music, craft beer, and cherry-wood house smoked meat dishes. [Hoodline]

BERKELEY — Though Cafe Rouge shuttered not long ago, its replacement at 1782 4th St. has already been announced. Pompette, from Chez Panisse and Bay Wolf alums, will be a French/Italian/Spanish casual restaurant open for lunch and dinner. Look out for a late March opening. [Tablehopper]



February 15

The ever-popular American restaurant Wayfare Tavern is adding a new experience: an exclusive, 50-seat fourth floor bar with craft cocktails, beer, wine, with the possibility of food in the future. Get excited for this one.

FINANCIAL DISTRICT — Wayfare Tavern has designs on the fourth floor of their building at 558 Sacramento St. Interior designer Ken Fulk is tricking out the skylit cocktail lounge, which will function as a fifty-seat bar called The Sequoia with a view of the Transamerica building, to open in early March. MARINA — Equator Coffees & Teas is the latest addition to join Fort Mason’s artillery of bars, cafes, and restaurants. No word yet on when the space will be open. [Inside Scoop]

TENDERLOIN — You’ll soon be able to snag Asian-inspired pork sliders any day of the week, as Asian fusion pop-up The Pork Exchange is opening a permanent pork shop at 807 Ellis St. within the year. [Hoodline]

NAPA — CREAM, the ice cream and cookie combo shop that’s been sweetening up Berkley since 2010, is headed to South Napa Century Center on Gasser Drive. [Napa Valley Register]

NAPA — Chetuphon Thai is joining a fleet of new shops in South Napa Century Center (Gasser Drive), and will be the third California-based Thai eatery opened by the same husband and wife team, who also own Vacaville’s Buddha Thai Bistro and Benicia’s Maithai Cuisine. [Napa Valley Register]



February 8

The East Bay dominates this week in coming attractions, with new locations for both Blue Bottle and Cholita Linda expected to open sometime this year. However, the most exciting announcement might be in the Mission, where Foreign Cinema plans to open a Parisian-styled wine bar adjacent to its flagship restaurant.

OAKLAND— Blue Bottle continues to conquer the East Bay with its micro-roasted organic beans. The latest venture has begun construction at 480 9th Street. [Hoodline]

OAKLAND — The Original Lady Esther’s, a casual breakfast and lunch spot that is setting up shop in Crossburger’s former location at 300 Frank H. Ogawa Plaza. Apparently not much besides the name will change at the restaurant, which opens this month. [Hoodline]

OAKLAND — Sandwich shop Dolma’s Deli has relocated, moving just one block south of its previous location in Jack London Square to 100 Broadway. The deli will open as soon as construction on the new kitchen is completed. [Hoodline]

ALAMEDA — Casual and colorful Cholita Linda is spicing up the East Bay with a second location set to open at 1337 Park Street. It will be serving up the same menu of Baja fish tacos, chicharron de pollo, and Cuban sandwiches as its other location. [Berkeleyside]

MISSION — Foreign Cinema’s rapidly expanding wine cellar will soon have a home of its own at 2540 Mission Street. The classic San Francisco restaurant is opening a wine bar adjacent to its prime location on Mission, with plans to serve an impressive Burgundy-focused wine collection with more than 15,000 bottles. MARIN— SF’s modern Jewish deli is headed to Larkspur, as Wise Sons Deli plots an outpost in Marin Country Mart. The outdoor retail center is home to Rustic Bakery, Bel Campo, and other high-end fast casual spots; Wise Sons should fit in nicely, offering a much needed bagel outlet for the area. In this week’s restaurant announcements, Union Street’s dining scene continues to improve, this time with an upcoming caviar tasting room and a vegan deli. Plus, several hotels are set to open in San Francisco, sprucing up downtown’s dining scene with rooftop terraces, bars, and restaurants.

COW HOLLOW — Union Street is classing things up a bit with a tasting room and shop from The Caviar Company. Sisters Saskia and Petra Bergstein are opening an outpost for their luxury goods at 1954 Union St., which will also be available for private parties and events come March. [Tablehopper]

COW HOLLOW — Vegan Picnic, a vegan-forward deli and market, has plans to open at 1977A Union St. in what was formerly known as Black Pearl. Anticipate an early February opening. [Hoodline]

UNION SQUARE — A diminutive version of French patisserie Tout Sweet is moving to the ground floor of Macy’s at Union Square (170 O’Farrell Street) this week. Called Petit Tout Sweet, it will be an ultra-convenient grab-and-go bakery, serving up Parisian treats like sugary macarons, cookies, cakes, tarts, and more. [EaterWire]

INNER RICHMOND — The owners of Nob Hill’s Beanstalk Cafe are taking over beloved neighborhood cafe Village Market at 4555 California Street. The concept will remain similar to Village Market’s casual, beer-and-wine focused menu. [Hoodline]

SOMA — A new hotel concept is in the works right across the street from AT&T Park at 144 King Street. Called Hotel Via, it’s promised to have a rooftop lounge outfitted with communal tables, private draped cabanas, and fire pits. No word yet on whether or not the lounge will be available to the public as well as hotel guests. [SFist]

SOMA — The former Olivet Theological University at 250 Fourth Street is being transformed into an 11-story hotel. Details still remain scarce for the project, but it’s been confirmed that a restaurant, roof top terrace, lobby, and bar are all in the works. [SFist]

TENDERLOIN — Japanese-style capsule hotel Yotel expects to open some time this year at 1095 Market Street with a lounge situated on its rooftop. Stay tuned for details. [SFist]

TENDERLOIN — Eagerly-anticipated design-driven Proper Hotel is one step closer to opening its doors at 45 McAllister Street, which means the opening of four new on-premise “chef-driven” restaurants. Three of the restaurants will set up shop on the hotel’s ground floor, while the fourth will be located on the hotel’s breezy rooftop terrace. [SFist]

MILPITAS — AMF Mission Lanes is reopening as Bowlero, a 40-lane bowling alley with food and drink. It’s a 33,000-square-foot space and it will open on February 25. [EaterWire]



January 25

This week brings news of several upcoming Oakland openings. The city will soon be receiving a few taquerias along with two new organically-minded kitchens.

CASTRO — Deccan Spice’s Indian food will soon be taking over 468 Castro St. It’s the operation’s second San Francisco location, among a string of others across the country. [Hoodline]

OAKLAND — The Organic Coup has plans to open a location inside Oakland City Center (1300 Clay St.) for its organic fried chicken sandwiches, wraps, and salads. [Hoodline]

OAKLAND — Casual Mexican joint EZ Taqueria will soon be opening at Subway’s former location at 4013 Telegraph Ave. [Hoodline]

OAKLAND — Alameda-based Julie’s Coffee & Tea Garden has designs on 4316 Telegraph Ave., serving up cafe beverages, beer, wine, and an organically-minded menu. [Hoodline]

OAKLAND — La Chata Taqueria is setting up shop at 346 14th St., with no word on an opening date. [Hoodline]



January 18

Get ready for a Super Duper world takeover, as the San Francisco burger chain eyes a worldwide expansion. For now, though, that means adding three more locations in the Bay Area, including one at SFO.

SFO — San Francisco’s homegrown burger chain Super Duper Burger will open early 2018 in Terminal 1. [EaterWire]

CONCORD — The fast food burger joint (Super Duper) is also adding a Concord location in The Veranda at 2001-2003 Diamond Blvd., to open in 2017. [EaterWire]

OUTER RICHMOND — A Brazilian bakery from two new Brazilian San Franciscans is opening at 2960 Clement St. Saltroot Bakery will sell pão de queijo (cheese puffs), and other savory pastries, as well as green juices, fruit, salad, and coffee. [Hoodline]

THE CASTRO — 3801 17th St. is becoming a Korean street food spot called Saucy Asian, and it will open in the next two months. The concept comes from eating street food while out partying in Seoul, and includes Korean barbecue tacos, burritos, and bowls. [Hoodline]

SOMA — Another food truck is going brick and mortaer, with The GrilledCheezGuy permanently parking at 529 Stevenson St. The shop should open in February for breakfast, lunch, and happy hour. [Hoodline]

CONCORD — A third Bay Area location of burger joint Wayback Burgers is headed to 4375 Clayton Rd., timed to arrive this spring. [Mercury News]



January 11

There’s a number of exciting attractions that will hit the Bay in the upcoming months. Most notably, Michelin-starred chef Takatoshi Toshi of Sushi Ran is making plans for a Russian Hill sushi spot, Daniel Patterson is plotting a second Alta location inside of Minnesota Street Project, and former Saison chef Scott Clark is dreaming up a roadside stand in Half Moon Bay.

DOGPATCH — Daniel Patterson plans to open another Alta this spring, this time inside of artist co-op and gallery Minnesota Street Project’s sprawling warehouse. It will be the same menu as that of Alta’s Market location in the roomy interior at MSP, which will include a 45-seat bar. [EaterWire]

RUSSIAN HILL — Michelin-starred sushi chef Takatoshi Toshi of Sushi Ran and Lower Haight’s Ijji owners Billy Kong and Kua Chuang are uniting forces to create Kinjo, an edomae-style omakase restaurant. Expect bright flavors, fresh fish, and lots of rice from this 42-seat restaurant which will be serving its menu for $120 per person. Kinjo expects to open on January 24 at 2206 Polk St. [Eater Wire]

HALF MOON BAY — Scott Clark, former chef de cuisine of Saison’s Michelin-starred menu has turned his sights toward a charming, unpretentious roadside shop he’s named Dad’s Luncheonette. The menu is filled with delights for under $15 a pop (think grass-fed burgers, fried chicken sandwiches, and corn dogs with shaved bonito). The stand will open on 225 Cabrillo Highway South in February. [Eater Wire]

MID-MARKET — Down-to-earth Southern food is taking over 1446 Market St. with the arrival of Hazel Southern Bar & Kitchen in mid-February. The casual restaurant will host a bourbon-centered cocktail list and and traditional Southern fare, which it also already supplies to Mr. Tipple’s Recording Room next door. [EaterWire]

NOE VALLEY — 1361 Church Street has remained vacant ever since a fire ravaged Fattoush Mediterranean Cuisine over a year ago. Now, there’s a bustle of activity at the spot with the upcoming arrival of wood-fired pizzeria Sasa’s Pizza, although there’s no word yet on when the opening will take place. [SF Gate]

CASTRO — The third story of 4230 18th St. will soon be home to a revived iteration of Mourac, a former hookah lounge and Mediterranean restaurant located in the Mission up until 2009. While hookah will no longer remain on the menu, the owner is adding a distinctive wine list and keeping the Mediterranean-inflected cuisine. [Hoodline]

MISSION — Details are scarce for a restaurant called Brown Sugar Kitchen, which is setting up shop in the location of a former kebab shop at 525 Valencia St. [Capp Street Crap]

HAYES VALLEY — More fresh-pressed juice and casual heath-centered food will soon be served on behalf of Urban Remedy, whose third San Francisco location will open at 450 Hayes St. in the upcoming months. [Hoodline]

FIDI — Two nearby illy Caffès are opening over the next few days, one in the Financial District at 220 Montgomery St., the other just across Market at 90 New Montgomery. The former location will be Illy’s flagship San Francisco store, completed by a retail shop selling espresso machines, signature espresso cups, and beans. [Hoodline]

OUTER RICHMOND —A sign has been posted at 3605 Balboa St. announcing the imminent arrival of Mr. Bahn Mi, a straightforward Vietnamese sandwich shop. [Richmond District Blog]

INNER SUNSET — Irving Cafe has vacated 716 Irving St. to make room for Takuya, a Japanese hot-dog shop that will soon be serving up hot dogs drenched in teriyaki and flecked with bonito. [Hoodline]

CASTRO — “Super fusion” street food will soon be brightening the storefront at 3801 17th St. with Saucy Asian’s mix of Korean-focused flavors. Items like Korean tacos, short rib bowls, barbecue bowls, and poke will all be on the menu. Expect a February opening. [Tablehopper]



January 4

San Francisco’s power players are not messing around with 2017, kicking the year off with a mad expansion dash. The teams at ABV, Seed & Salt, Wood Tavern, Boot & Shoe Service and more are all adding locations or opening new concepts in the coming year.

MISSION — ABV’s upstairs overlook at 3174 16th St. will become Over Proof at the end of the month. While still run by the same team as ABV, it will be a stand alone project that serves a reservation-only tasting menu of food and cocktails focused on a single spirit. This month, it kicks off with a theme called Flip Flop, serving up Trinidadian food and rum-inspired drinks amid tiki room decor. [Eaterwire]

BERKELEY — East Bay restaurateur Charlie Hallowell (Penrose, Pizzaiolo) is venturing out of Oakland for the first time with the opening of his second outpost of Boot & Shoe Service at 2286 Shattuck Ave. [Berkeleyside]

TENDERLOIN — The owner of Oakland’s Grocery Cafe will open Laphet this month, a banquet-style Burmese spot with tea pairings, at 448 Larkin St. [Tablehopper]

SOMA — Puerto Rico is conquering the corner at 1501 Folsom St. with the arrival of Calle 11/Del Encanto, a three-story nightclub, bar, and restaurant that will host nightly salsa music and Puerto Rican flavors on its open air rooftop. Expect an early January opening. [SFGate]

OAKLAND — Rich Wood of Wood Tavern is revitalizing Oakland’s beloved Bay Wolf restaurant, which closed last summer. He’ll be cooking up a California-inspired menu and adding a 12-seat dining counter with a view of the open kitchen to the building located at 3853 Piedmont Ave. [Zagat]

SOMA — Coletta Gelato will start serving homemade gelato from its post at 685 Harrison St. later this month. Even better, the team hopes to serve its inventive, icy flavors to workers all over SoMa later in the year with the arrival of its traveling gelato bike cruiser. [Zagat]

LOWER NOB HILL — The fourth iteration of popular Vancouver-based restaurant Bao Down will set up shop in the former location of Michelin-starred heavyweight Masa at 648 Bush St. Bao Down will serve Asian-inspired fare amid a hip-hop heavy atmosphere of splashy murals in a modern, stripped down interior. 2016 was San Francisco’s year of poke, but it turns out 2017 might bring an even stronger focus on the raw fish dish, judging by the upcoming attractions slated to open early in the year. With two poke spots setting up shop in the East Bay in the upcoming months, Hawaii’s most popular culinary export of the year continues to grow even hotter.

OAKLAND — Poke is making its mark on the Bay, and in mid-January, Oakland’s Chinatown will receive its first ever poke restaurant. Called Poke Zone, it will serve up the signature Hawaiian fish dish from its storefront at 329 11th St. [Hoodline]

BERKELEY — Poke Parlor is coming to 485 Telegraph Ave. in February with an all-sustainable focus. This particular poke shop will serve only fish that are caught using environmentally-friendly fishing techniques and will dabble in Japanese, Korean, and Hawaiian culinary influences. SONOMA — There are plans for a seafood-centric roadhouse called Reel Fish Shop & Grill to take over Rossi’s 1906 former location at 401 Grove St., with an opening slated for early January. [Bite Club Eats]

SANTA ROSA — The sprawling space at 505 Mendocino has witnessed more than one restaurant closure, but this bleak history hasn’t intimidated newcomer Tipsy Taco, which is preparing to serve up a menu of tacos and margaritas in 2017. [Bite Club Eats]

BERKELEY — The East Bay’s second iteration of Lemonade is set to serve its on-the-go health-conscious menu to all those seeking a quick, nutritious bite in spring 2017. The new location will be next door to Sprenger’s Fish Grotto on Fourth Street and will be nearly the thirtieth Lemonade to open in California. [East Bay Express].

The coolest news this week is the relocation of chef Deuki Hong, who is moving here from New York City, where he received many accolades for his work at Korean barbecue restaurant Kang Ho Dong Baekjeong. Now, he’ll be bringing his particular brand of KBBQ here, as well as a casual fried chicken shack. Get excited.

FILLMORE — Chef Deuki Hong of NYC’s Kang Ho Dong Baekjong is bringing Korean fried chicken to 1522 Fillmore St., with his latest concept called Sunday Bird. Prepare for a February 2017 opening. [Eaterwire]

FILLMORE — Aside from his plans for Sunday Bird, chef Deuki Hong hopes to spice up SF’sKorean barbecue scene with a still-unnamed restaurant and fermentation lab that will take up residency on Fillmore Street. If all goes according to plan, the restaurant should be open in 2017. [Eaterwire]

SFO — Jet lagged travelers will soon receive nourishment in the form of Farmerbrown’s soul food, which recently won a contract to open inside SFO’s Terminal 1. A projected opening date has yet to be announced. [Eaterwire]

SOMA — Danish juice bar Joe & the Juice is sweeping through the U.S. and now has plans to take up residency at a 2500-square-foot location at 301 Howard St. [Eaterwire]

OAKLAND — Meat eaters can rejoice with the arrival of Gastropig, a casual, pork-tastic cafe from the owners of Newberry Market & Deli that will be setting up shop just outside of the 19th street BART station at 2123 Franklin St. Sit tight — Gastropig plans to open on Tuesday, January 3. MISSION — Chubby Noodle and Pushback Wine’s Nick Floulis is carving out another diminutive coffee shop as a secondary offshoot of his North Beach cafe counter Hole in the Wall Coffee. UNION SQUARE — A Chinese restaurant will be taking over First Crush’s former location at 101 Cyril Magnin St. with plans to serve casual Cantonese fare. Dubbed King Kee, It’s slated to open on Saturday, December 31. [Hoodline]

NAPA — Replacing Ca’Momi in Oxbow Public Market (610 1st St.) is LiveFire Pizza. The restaurant plans on serving wood-fired pizza, salads, and sandwiches with an opening slated for spring 2017. [Eaterwire]

CHINATOWN — A Chinese vegetarian restaurant called Tastee Steam Kitchen is expected to open at 329 11th St., although an opening date has yet to be announced. [Hoodline]

SOMA — The owners of Leo’s Oyster Bar are teaming up to takeover Les Clos’s location (234 Townsend St.) with the creation of Petit Marlowe, a raw-bar focused diminutive of Marlowe. NOE VALLEY — Butcher shop Barons Meat & Poultry will be serving up humanely raised, hormone-free meats in Drewes Meats former space (1706 Church St.), with an anticipated opening of February 2017.



December 7

COW HOLLOW — Chef Dominique Crenn is opening a wine bar in the space adjacent to Atelier Crenn (3131 Fillmore St.) called Bar Crenn. The opening is currently projected for April 2017. [EaterWire]

OUTER SUNSET — Woods Beer Co. continues its rapid expansion with Outbound, the newest and fifth addition to the stable of drinking spots. It is projected to open in January at 4045 Judah St. [EaterWire]

WALNUT CREEK — A food hall is headed to Walnut Creek, courtesy of the developers behind Teleferic, Slice House, Va de Vi, and more. The still-unnamed project will be a multi-building and -level complex at 1250 Locust St. with 33,387 square feet of space, set to arrive in 2018. [EaterWire]

SAN MATEO — Berkeley’s homegrown brewery, Fieldwork, has announced plans for a 4,500-square-foot beer garden at Bay Meadows in San Mateo. It will have 12 beers on tap, some food, and growlers to go, in addition to fire pits and communal seating; expect a spring debut. [Liquid Bread Magazine]
