The transformation of upper Market Street in Duboce Triangle took another step forward this week with the start of construction at 2198 Market, a future 87-unit rental building at the corner of Market and Sanchez streets. The new construction is rising on the site of a former gas station. When complete, the four-story Heller-Manus designed building will be home to 36 two-bedroom units and 51 one-bedrooms, as well as 5,115 square feet of ground-floor commercial space. Part of that commercial space is set aside for a restaurant.

Developer Greystar Development initially planned to pay into the city's affordable housing fund instead of planning below-market units on site. However, neighborhood organizations urged the developer to put the units at 2198 Market, and now at least 10 of the building's apartments will be reserved for affordable housing.
