Welcome to Curbed Comparisons, a regular column exploring what you can rent for a set dollar amount in different neighborhoods. Is one person's studio another person's townhouse? Let's find out. Today's price: $3,000.
↑ We're way below the median rent today and things are going to get weird, but our first listing is the rather charming top floor of a bungalow in Pacific Heights for $2,950/month. It's actually in the backyard of another house, but has its own gate, and it's two blocks from Alta Plaza Park with a deck of its own on the bottom floor and stained glass accents on the windows. It also looks almost suspiciously roomy for the price. You have to be cautious about scammers on Craigslist, but Kenney & Everest assure us this is a legit ad.
↑ Number two is a bargain in Nob Hill — a very small bargain. This micro-unit is only 450 square feet as evidenced by the fact that all of the photos in the ad are just the same room facing in different directions. It's $2,885/month (or, if you will, $6.40 per foot). Yowza. That said, the little place is cute. Plus, it's in an amazing location right across the street from the InterContinental Mark Hopkins and two blocks from Grace Cathedral and Huntington Park. Cats are fine, but no dogs (presumably because they'd go stir crazy).
↑ After coming down off the hill, this 700-square-foot apartment in the Mission will look downright roomy. It's a one-bedroom unit in a circa 1900 building for $2995/month on 25th and Howard, advertised as "lightly furnished" and "immaculate" (as one would hope in any rental situation). Rent covers utilities and the wi-fi. There are even a few classy touches, like a swath of brick in the living room. Alas, no pets.
↑ The number four spot is an alleged one-bedroom loft in the Tenderloin for $3,000/month, but that "bedroom" is really just an alcove with a bed at the top of a flight of stairs, so they're really fudging the numbers here. Oddly enough, this building used to be KGO Channel 7, now known as the Lofts at 7, and they even kept the decorative numeral in the lobby. You can survey the entirety of the apartment and the accompanying view from up in the alcove, so at least you know you're paying for.
↑ Finally, a one-bedroom apartment at the very edge of Noe Valley for a highly specific $2,899/month. They're selling this one with the gorgeous views. Indeed, it is quite a survey of the city up there, with a small deck and legit floor to ceiling windows on one side. This is on 23rd Street, a few blocks from Douglass Playground. However, you won't be taking any dog for a walk because (alas) this is yet another no-pets building.
