FELIX Selvidis Bros oHg is a renowned equipment manufacturer for the wood and sawmill industry, domiciled in Ionia Thessaloniki, Greece. Founded in 1976, FELIX supplies equipment and system components for highest quality demands. In the past a customer of FELIX had problems with metal particles in logs which, among others, had been purchased from Kosovo. These problems especially involved shell splinters which in wood processing caused considerable damage at saw gates, log milling machines, and cut-off saws.

At the 2008 Wood Fair in Klagenfurt S+S presented the LICON-HX metal detection system. Janis and Michael Selvidis contacted S+S because this system was the solution for the problem of their customer. In August 2009 S+S installed the LICON-HX metal detection system in Greece.

The LICON-HX metal detection system comprises the LIGNUM-HX metal detector and a heavy-duty conveyor belt. Both these components were designed and developed especially for the specific demands of the sawmill industry, and they form a cost-efficient complete solution for the detection of metal particles that are embedded in logs. The system not only detects ferrous objects, but also embedded particles of any other types of metal (such as stainless steel, copper, lead). LICON-HX thus provides optimal protection for log milling machines, cut-off saws, and saw gates, and prevents expensive repairs, retooling times, and downtimes in sawmills.

LICON-HX is installed in the conveyor line between log feeder and sawing line, and transports the logs through the metal detector. If a metal is detected in the log, the system activates a marking unit, and a paint sprayer marks the contaminated position on the log. On the inside of  the coil the system is equipped with a wooden impact protector.

Due to the new RZ technology of S+S only a very small metal-free zone is required for installing the metal detector coil. The complete system features a very short installation length and is integrated in the conveyor system with very limited available space.

The new design of the LIGNUM-HX metal detector guarantees trouble-free long-term operation under rough, in Greece also quite hot, environmental conditions. Potting with polymer concrete (instead of

conventional foam fillings) and the new internal coil design considerably improve noise immunity to vibration, impacts, and temperature fluctuations. The stainless steel housing is corrosion-free and provides much better shielding against electrosmog (EMC) than the steel or aluminium housings of conventional detectors.

As Michael Selvidis, manager of FELIX Selvidis Bros oHg, comments on the system: "Our customer is highly satisfied with the LICON-HX metal detection system. Since the system was completely planned and designed by S+S, all the customer requirements for example concerning sturdiness, special colour marking, and short installation length, have been fully met.  Shell splinters have already been detected in a log, and LICON-HX thus has paid off after a short time of use."
