If you are looking for a family friendly movie this weekend, why not pick up a copy of Parental Guidance staring Billy Crystal, Bette Midler and Marisa Tomei. The film is currently available on Blu-ray, DVD, VOD, digital download and other viewing methods. I was sent a copy of this film free to review (there was no compensation). It has been my experience that often when you see a trailer for a film they show you the best parts of the film in that 60 second clip. After you are enticed to go see the movie you are disappointed when you find out the rest of the movie is a dud. That is NOT the case with Parental Guidance. In fact, my family was pleasantly surprised by just how good the movie was. When my husband and I first saw the trailer for the film we though it looked good, but like I said, sometimes movie trailers are the only good parts in the film. When I put the movie in for my family to watch my husband was chuckling within the first few minutes. That was a good sign because throughout the film we were all laughing, even my hard to impress teenagers. Billy Crystal stars as Artie Decker, a popular baseball announcer that suddenly finds himself without a job. His Diane (Bette Midler) feels that this might be a blessing in disguise, but Artie is not convinced of that. Artie and Diane have child, a grown daughter name Alice (Marisa Tomei). Alice moved to Georgia with her family and Artie and Diane don’t get to see the family often. As per Alice that is not such a bad thing. Alice tends to break out in a rash whenever she even mentions her parents. Alice’s husband Phil is up for a prestigious award and he’s love nothing more than to whisk Alice away with him for a romantic getaway. There is just one problem – what to do with the kids? Phil’s parents are on a cruise and they are new in town so they don’t really have any friends they can rely on. That leaves only one other option – invite Artie and Diane to come and stay with the children so they can go away on the trip. Alice reluctantly agrees. The big issue for Alice is parenting style. Alice and Phil have a more “new age” approach to parenting such as “use your indoor voice”, “use your words”, no sugar, placing a huge emphasis on academics and music, among other things. Artie and Diane on the other hand are more “old school” when it comes to parenting and believe that kids should be kids and shouldn’t have such strict regimes. What ensues is a lot of “head butting” on parenting styles between Artie and Alice. Alice conveniently tries to stall leaving for the trip because she fears what her parents will do to the children and reluctantly leaves when forced by her mom. Artie and Alice try their daugther’s way of parenting, with disastrous results. They decided to give up trying and just parent the children the way they see fit. Will Artie and Diane finally win over their grandchildren and their daughter’s respect? Who learns valuable lessons from this experience? Will Alice ever let her parents babysit the children again? To find out you need to pick up a copy of Parental Guidance , available where ever movies are sold. This movie was funny. I was pleasantly surprised at just how funny it was. I knew with Billy Crystal the movie would have it’s comedic moments, but it had much more than I anticipated. Billy Crystal and Bette Midler were the kind of grandparent I would love to have as a child. Marisa Tomei does a great job portraying the neurotic mom who rapidly “loses it” when she sees her parents give the children ice cream and allows their pre-teen daughter to skip music practice for a party. This is a family friendly movie, even for young family members. There is no bad language or violence (unless you consider Billy Crystal getting hit in the “privates” with a baseball bat as violence?). Parents will find humor in this movie. Children will find humor in this movie. Even hard to impress teenagers will find it hard not to laugh. I’m giving Parental Guidance two thumbs up for being laugh-out-loud funny. I did check out the deleted scenes and the gag reel (those are always my favorite). I also enjoyed the In Character featurette with the stars of the film, although I would consider the child actors starts of the film too. They were very enjoyable to watch.
