Seattle’s Pike Place Expansion to Include 40 Senior Housing Units
An expansion of Seattle’s famed Pike Place Market is making way for new senior housing development.
The $34 million project “will help build new shops, an underground-parking garage, senior housing and a new public plaza and walkway designed to connect the Market with the central waterfront after the Alaskan Way Viaduct is torn down,” according to a report by the Seattle Times.
The city’s general supportive fund is financing construction for the project, which has long been in discussions but never brought to fruition. The plan for 40 low income senior housing units includes ground-level apartments that are designed as live-work spaces and will open onto the plaza, according to the report.
The project is anticipated to take 18 months for construction with a longer-spanning vision for the market’s expansion.
Providers Partner on New $75 Million Senior Housing, Health Care Community
Partners Dr. Phillips Inc., Harbor Retirement Associates and Orland Health are working together on the development of a new, $75 million health care community in southwest Orange County, Florida, according to a report by the Orlando Business Journal.
The community will be developed and operated by Harbor Retirement Associates, based in Vero Beach, Florida, and will include 80 independent living units, 70 assisted living units and 30 memory care apartments, the report indicates, for 180 units total on the 26-acre campus.
Amenities will include full service dining, around the clock staff, daily transportation, housekeeping and laundry, among others.
The campus is also planned to include offices for primary care physicians and specialists from regional practices Physician Associates and Orlando Health Physicians.
The medical building is slated for construction of 60,000 square feet, also to be developed by Dr. Phillips, Inc. Groundbreaking is expected in summer 2015, with project completion anticipated to be delivered in fall 2017.
Wisconsin Memory Care Design Receives Approval
STUDIO Architecture’s design for a new senior care facility in Oconomowoc, Wisconsin received unanimous approval by the city council and architectural review board. STUDIO was selected by Colorado and Wisconsin-based Azura Living, a premier memory care provider, to design the project.
“We’re pleased that the regulatory authorities were unanimous in their approval. That’s pretty rare” said Jeff Dawson, founder and managing principal of STUDIO. According to Dawson, Azura Living has been an active partner in STUDIO’s design effort. “We went through a highly collaborative process with the Azura development team.”
Construction is slated to begin this summer on the 28,800 square-foot facility, which incorporates several memory care design concepts including the creation of smaller communities within the project which are linked with intuitive markers to provide residents the opportunity to “travel” beyond their neighborhoods; looped circulation corridors that will provide a safe environment for self-directed resident navigation and exploration; a “memory café” to encourage family and guests to relax and spend time within the community; intuitive wayfinding design elements integrating interior finishes, colors, artwork and other visual connectivity devices and relieve the stress associated with wandering; low contrast flooring to reduce the experience of ‘visual cliffs’; and integration of Snoezelon multi-sensory environments into the project.

Integral Senior Living Breaks Ground on 162-Unit Utah Community
Integral Senior Living (ISL) has begun construction on a new community it will be managing. The Ridge Senior Living is an assisted living and memory care community located in Salt Lake City, Utah. It is scheduled to open in spring 2016.
The Ridge is a three-story building offering 162 assisted living and memory care apartments and underground parking.
“The design is modern utilizing many windows in the design to take advantage of the amazing views,” ISL said in a statement. “In addition the building features all the latest in technology to enhance residents’ lives.”
Two local companies are working on the project; Sahara Construction is the building contractor and AJC Architects is the designer of this senior living community. The project is owned by Dave Farrell, an independent developer of assisted living and memory care communities in California and Utah.

Provision Living’s Missouri Assisted Living, Memory Care Community Opens
Construction is complete on Oak Pointe in Maryville, Missouri. Now the nearly 40,000-square-foot, single-story community is preparing to welcome its first residents at the end of the month.
Oak Pointe has 46 apartments serving assisted living and memory care residents, with 20 of the apartments reserved.
Oak Pointe is owned by ClearPath Senior Holdings, LLC, and operated by Provision Living.
Oak Pointe is expecting a total of 25 residents who made pre-deposits on apartments during the construction phase to move in between late March and early April.
“We take time to gradually move everyone in at a pace that works for them,” said Kim Florea, RN, executive director at Oak Pointe, in a statement. “We certainly don’t want to bring in all the residents at once on the same day, as that could be a bit overwhelming. We want to do what works best for them, with the least amount of stress involved.”
The apartments include kitchenettes, closet space and individual climate control and they are pet-friendly apartments. The community offers restaurant-style breakfast, lunch and dinner; weekly housekeeping and laundry; activity and social programs; a full-time nursing staff; emergency call system with 24-hour onsite response; religious services and more.
The community offers a private dining area large enough to accommodate family and special occasions; a wellness center and space for physician visits and therapy services; courtyard and garden areas; a crafts and hobby room; a full-service beauty and barber salon; resident laundry rooms; and parking.
